84 2WD Front Brakes .. how involved?

I was going to do the pads and rotors for my 84 F150, but the rotors were out of stock locally. And, they apparently are "integrated hub" .. which seems scary.

What is involved with replacing them? Any special tools like presses needed? Should i replace the bearings at the same time? Anything else?

What parts are needed, if any, besides pads and the rotors/hubs?

If I was replacing rotors, I'd install new bearings as well. I suppose you could remove the bearings from the old rotors and install in the new ones, but it's not something I'd do. Others on here may feel differently about it. No special tools other than a brass drift or brass punch set, that's what I used to install the races in my '84 2wd.

I had to buy a disk brake hardware kit as my old parts were worn/beat-up and rusty, but the kit is only about $10-$12 iirc. Not a bad idea to have if you're dealing with any rust issues.

Took me about 4 hours to do both sides, replacing nearly everything (bearings rotors, pads, calipers, hoses, hardware)

Might want to do wheel bearings while you’re there and now would be the time to do ball joints if there ever was.

Integrated hub means the brake rotor and hub are one piece.

Ok, so it looks like the bits and pieces are:
  1. Pads
  2. Rotor/Hub
  3. Inner Bearing
  4. Outer Bearing
  5. Maybe a brake hardware kit if rusty
  6. Wheel Bearing Grease

You'll need a new grease seal for each side as well if you're doing all that. They're cheap.

Yes, each bearing is 2 piece. Inner race with rollers, and outer races. Sometimes called cups and cones.

You can buy rotors with the bearing races pre-installed. Doesn't add much to the cost. I would really spring for new hardware, about 0.95 a set from rock auto. The slide pins are tension-fit, so they can shrink over time.

What's scary about it? EVERY car & truck rotor that Ford made has the hub and rotor as a one piece assembly.

I have never done a 2wd, but on the 4x4 you just get the rotor. You still have to take everything off, and then drive all the wheel studs out, and then it falls apart in two pieces, the hub and the rotor.

I've done brakes on handful of vehicles over the years, and none of them involved the hub/bearings, or really anything that felt like it might result in a wheel falling off on the highway. That, combined with my level of competence, is what's scary!!
