Local dealer quoted me $500 for adding remote start. I currently have 12 volt solutions starter but the range is poor and off the stock fob. Any advise on possibly doing the install myself with forescan or maybe even making my fob have more distance? Also, is it possible to use the ford pass app for any of this?
Read that post in it's entirety and most of your questions should be answered.
Do not pay a dealer $500. You can purchase the parts for the OEM remote start for less than $250, and installation is super easy. All you need is a computer and the FORScan stuff is easy too.
I was also disappointed by the 12.volt Solutions. Return that junk and buy OEM.
Many people are buying the parts from Banner Ford in Louisiana or Fairway Ford in Ohio.
A check on Ford's accessories website will get you the part numbers and will show just how ridiculous the price is buying from that website. Banner or Fairway will save you big.
Banner was great when I did the install in my 2016. The were able to activate the lock/unlock via the fob, and I'm located on the Canada/NY border.
I had to visit the dealer to activate the remote start function. They charged me $40 to hook to their IDS. Some dealers are $100 or more. I also had them turn on daytime running lights while they were at it. If you or a friend has FORScan you can likely do it yourself.

Don't even need to get part numbers. Just email Bobby @ Banner (websales_at_bannerauto_dot_com) and tell him your truck info. He'll tell you what you need (part numbers) and the price shipped to your door. Won't find it cheaper anywhere else.
Enabling remote start in the menu can be done with FORScan so either (a) find a member close to you who has it & a dongle or (b) buy yourself an ODBLink MX Bluetooth dongle and do it yourself. Super easy.

You don't need to go through "Bobby at Banner", either. I found other dealers that were the same price or cheaper. Just get the official part numbers, do a Google shopping search, and purchase the cheapest.
Also, you do not need a bluetooth dongle if you are going to use a PC to program FORScan. The USB dongle is only about $18 and works perfectly.
