2017 remote start

My truck did not come with remote start and I really would like to add it before winter starts. I want to stick with Ford OEM stuff, but I'm not sure what the best way to do this is. I have been looking here (and google) for options but there isn't a lot of information out there.

I don't like Ford's solution for having a separate fob for the remote start and will buy new keys with the remote start button in them if possible. I am also open to not doing the key fob and just doing the cell phone app to start if others like this option.

Don't know if it matters or not but I've got the XLT Premium trim. So what's the best way to accomplish this using ford parts? I already messaged Bobby at Banner but I think I should figure out the way I want to go before bugging him.

I am in the exact same predicament as you and messaged Bobby as well, same truck trim as well. I'm still weighing the decision between a viper or the cell phone method. Probably depends how much my dealer will charge to "activate" the remote start if I went the cell phone Ford route. I am getting an oil change this afternoon on a different vehicle, and I will inquire with the service department about the options and costs. OEM at time of build was ideal, but bought off the lot to keep some rebates from expiring or dropping (FR, private cash). I also am not a fan of multiple keyfobs tho, but if I'm in the mountains where cell service is spotty, I'd still like my remote start to work.

Remote Start

This can be done. I did it to transfer my existing Remote Access module from my F-150 to my 2017 F-250.

Here's what you need:

FT4Z-19A351-A 2015-17 F-150 Scalable Security System Kit (Works on SD too)
DL3Z-19A390-B. Ford Remote Access System (For app-based unlock)
FORScan with extended license if you do not have a dealer close by or want to pay one. (You'll also need a CAN-enabled OBD adapter, I recommend the OBDLink MX)

If you want to use keyfobs, you'll need an antenna and obviously keyfob. I did not implement this option so I do not have part numbers available.

Installation is easy.

1. Install the security system module. It's one simple plug and play harness. It takes more time to zip-tie the module in place than connect the wires.

2. Activate & test the security module.

3. Install the remote access module. It's one jumper that connects to the security module installed in step 1.

4. Activate remote start features on the truck. You can pay the dealer to do this in IDS, or use the latest FORScan build. If you go the FORScan route, access the IPC module and enable Remote Start & Remote Starter Parking Lamps.

5. Activate the remote access module. You can pay your local dealer to do this for you, or most online sellers who sell this module are dealers whom are usually willing to do this for you as part of your purchase. They will activate and generate you a PIN.

You're done. Enjoy your app-based remote start!

If you want to have keyfobs, you'll need to purchase the remote start antenna and keyfob.

A2C9-103170-2. Keyfob with remote start and tailgate release.
DA8Z-15603-A 2015-2017 Remote Start Antenna. (Plz verify at time of order)

I have not added the keyfob-based remote start. I'm more than happy to use the Ford Remote Access iPhone app as I have for the past 4 years.

Good luck!

Great info, do you happen to know if the Forscan Spreadsheet contains the info to do this?

Steve White this is great information, thank you for posting it! It sounds like you are happy with the remote start via the phone app, has it been pretty reliable? If you and others have been happy with that system then that's the way I will go, then I don't have to mess without antennas and changing or adding a second fob.

I know pretty much nothing about FORScan as I haven't had time to research it quite yet. Is there a difference at all between having the dealer do this in IDS or me doing it through FORScan?

If I make this (or any other changes) in FORScan will the dealer mess that up down the road when they service the truck or when they update the software?

Is me changing things in FORScan like the old tuners where it has to be changed back to stock before taking the truck into service? Sorry for the lame questions if this is common knowledge.

I think I just got talked out of the phone remote start system because of the $49 annual subscription. I'll likely just look at viper personally. The parts guy is still checking on the OEM remote start as well tho.

It's not on the sheet and does not need to be. When you open the IPC (NOT IPC As-Built) module FORScan recognizes the Remote start options and allows you enable and disable.

I have been very happy. I first installed in in July of 2014 in my 14 F-150. When I traded the truck last month I took out the Security and Remote Access modules. The older security module was not compatible so I had to replace that. The 3 year old remote access (Cellular) modules plugged right into the new Security Module and worked right away. The system is 99% reliable. Three limitations; you must have cell reception or WiFi on your phone to use the app, the truck must be in a cellular reception area, and the system will go to sleep after 3 days of not driving. You can program a wake up time to get around that limitation which is useful if you travel and leave the vehicle for days.

No difference. I had the dealer do all of the work on my '14 F-150. Now that excellent tools like FORScan exist, I took the chance with my 2017 F-250 SD. It literally took me 8 seconds to locate and enable the option. It really is that easy.

I don't think you have any reason to worry about the dealer wiping out the changes. As a worst case, should a module fail and have to be replaced, you would have to go back into FORScan and re-enable remote start. Chances are even in that case the dealer will see that you have a remote start module and enable it for you.

Thanks again for all of your help Steve, really appreciate it!

Got2haveit I understand and kind of agree with you but $50 per year is really not much to have the convenience of this (OEM parts) system. Years ago I had an aftermarket alarm installed on a pickup truck by a supposedly reputable installer and they messed the electrical system up so bad I promised myself I would never let anybody tap into an electrical system for any reason ever again.

I ordered the two parts that Steve listed from Banner and am going to hopefully get it all set up via FORScan.

I will report back with my results.

Here is another option I found. Plug and play and you rent their programmer for $50 to add the remote start settings into your instrument cluster settings. I'm sure forescan may be able to do this as well.

I saw that but have not been able to find much information other than from the seller. Maybe I am overthinking this but thought I would rather have OEM parts rather than anything else.

I do like the idea of being able to start it with three clicks on my existing fob, as well as being able to disable the horn honking which would not make my wife or my neighbors happy when I leave for work in the mornings. I wish I could have found more reviews on this system from actual users.

I'm actually leaning quite heavily towards this option. Probably a couple weeks from ordering. Want window tint first. I'll definitely let others know my results if I go this route.

I ended up ordering the security module and remote access module from Bobby at Banner, he gave me a great price and shipped them to me very quick. Per Steve’s instructions I got the security module installed and activated, then got the remote access module installed.

I then went in through FORScan and enabled the remote start system. I checked the trucks dash menu and figured out I was missing the climate control option, so I went back in and also enabled as many options that were pertainable to my truck. All the options are now there in my trucks menu.

I just need Bobby to activate my module and give me a pin to get it working!

I put this on my 2017 F250 6.7 a couple of months ago and it has worked great. Easy to install and it worked out of the box with no issues. My truck sits in the hot Florida sun and I use this all the time to cool the truck off before I go out to get in.
