hey guys had a question i have a 89 f150 and for the past year ive been having clucking and popping from my front axle sometimes right before i stop some when i turn or take off i did notice that my D-side axle moves up/down and side to side a lot more then the other side can some one tell me what this is please, (when im in 4wd for a long time it will start grinding or if i leave the hubs locked in for awhile afterwords)
i was talking about severely worn pivot, radius arm and shock bushings causing alot of play in the whole axle housing assembly allowing it to move from front to back, as well as making the clunking sounds.
We defiantly need a little more info on what exactly is happening.
If its the axle shaft then its probably the u-joint. And because its so lose it may have trashed some bearings, but you wont know until its all apart. And its not really all that hard to do either.
It really depends on how much damage and where you get the parts. You could find a locking hub that matches yours at a junkyard for rather cheap. Or you could replace both with new manuals hubs for around $100, plus $30 for the 1 u-joint, $30 for the new axle bearings and seals. And youll need some special tools, including the socket for the 4 prong spindle nut, and a blind hole puller/slide hammer.
well when i got the truck it had one stock hub (d-side) and a warn on the other side idk why it wasn't just both warn hubs soo is it a pain to change that u-joint
