2004 F150 FX4 5.4. I've read many of the IWE threads here and some of it is over my head. I believe I do have a problem though. Let me explain. No vibrations, noises , etc. When I jack the drivers side up in the garage ( engine running and electronic selector in 2WD) and rotate the wheel, the axle also turns. If I do the same on the Passenger side, axle does not turn as I believe its supposed to work. If I turn the Selector to 4H, on either side , the wheel becomes "locked" with the axle and you cannot rotate the wheel. I did this with only 1 wheel off the ground at a time. So at this time when I'm driving down the road in 2WD, the drivers side axle is turning and the Pass side is not. Probably been this way for some time. What should I be looking for? If the solenoid was bad, wouldn't both wheels be Locked( axle turning). In my case, only the drivers side appears to not be working properly. Sorry for the long post. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to start!
Your driver side IWE has failed in the locked position or you have a vacuum leak in the line to that side. Verify vacuum at the IWE large hose and if at least 17" vacuum @ idle warm engine in 2WD, replace the IWE. other wise, check for a vacuum leak.
I don't have a vacuum gauge , but just by putting my finger on the hose at the IWE actuator I can feel vacuum ( I expected more ) . Feels about the same as the other side which is working properly. I too believe that the drivers side actuator is "locked" in the engaged position. Who knows how long this problem has existed!! I ordered a new one from Rock Auto for around $60. I've never replaced one before, but I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Printed the step by step directions someone had posted on this site so I'll see what happens. Thanks!
