Hello,
I have an '81 F150 with the 9 inch rearend. I cant get it to stop leaking oil out of the right side axle seal and was wondering if the axle vent may be plugged up. My question is there a valve of some sort in the vent nipple on the axle, or is it just a hole straight through the axle tube? Thanks in advance.
Josh
There should be a nipple on the axle with a rubber hose hooked to it, clipped up to the frame under the truck. They usually have a little vent on the end of the hose under the frame. If my memory serves me correctly, the vent nipple is located on top of the axle on the left (drivers side) axle tube, about midway between the diff and the brake backing plate.
The vent is just a tube with no valve. Its unlikely that it would be plugged so long as the hose is still attached. Pull the hose off and see if you can blow through it, then check to see if you can slide a nail/wire through the vent tube into the axle housing. If there is no blockages then the axle seal is probably shot.
Today i crawled under my truck and took a drill bit to the vent nipple. No luck. It goes in halfway and then hits what has to be metal because there is no way dirt can be packed in that tight. i put a deflated balloon over the nipple and will avoid any off roadin to see if the balloon gets pumped up any to tell if the vent is working or not. Any of you guys have any feedback on this situation?
Thanks
Josh
I went ahead and drilled mine out. They have a tiny hole that is too easy to get clogged, and it is too important to keep it open. I don't like oil on my brake shoes.
A similar problem I am fighting on my 83 Bronco is that it pumps the diff. oil out the vent tube! I've replaced seals, carrier, etc, to see if those things would help, but so far to no avail. Can annyone help me with this???

How much fluid is being pumped out? This is common on cars that are taken to the race track (road race). The differential gets hot enough to cause this when it is under heavy load for prolonged periods. Sometimes just a small over flow catch can is all that is necessary, like one of the old style fuel filters for a carb, at the end of the hose. You can try lengthening the hose, and/or adding a small catch can.
If that doesn't help, then a lot of fluid must be trying to escape. So are you doing anything that should cause the diff to run hot? Pulling a trailer? Hauling? Big tires? Do you have gear whine?
This is a common problem in axles. Because they use two different types of steal (if you will) you get a reaction in the steal that starts corrosion. In time this will plug op the vent. Take a drill and drill out the ports on the fitting that the hose connects to at the axle. It might be like drilling through a steel plate. If that vent is plugged it will blow out the axle seals and cause all the problems that you are having. Been there done that.
