This one's not for me but for an old buddy of mine that can't use the computer. I've been telling him what a great resourse this site is.
He's restoring/rebuilding a '49, F-3 and has rebuilt the old V8 flattie, but wants to find a syncro-mesh trannie to marry up to it.
Where would you gurus go for such a trannie that will fit with the least amount of headaches? (I'm gittin one just thinking about it) slim
You could mount a later transmission behind the flattie. Ford transmission for the in larger trucks in '51 were synchronized. One problem you will encounter is the '51 and later transmission is slightly longer so you'll have to get the drive shaft from the newer truck, you might also have to get the rear cross member. The easiest way to determine if the transmission is synchronized it the reverse position is to the right and UP, not down like the non-synchronized tranny.
Actually, the easiest thing to do is learn to use the stock tranny. It's really not all that hard.
Bob, you're "preaching to the choir". Lol. I totally love my stock "crash 'n clash" 4-speed tranny but he's determined to go syncro. I was able to find an old Hone in-line overdrive for my F-2 so she can "run with the wind" at 1/3 less rpms with the stock rear-end.
So the 51's and later with the driveshft is one way to go, huh? I'll give him your information.

I'll take some next time I have it up, Ross. They work wonders on these old truck. I had to change the drive shaft, but Man, what a difference! Mine is the "inline" type (a little different than the link) with u-joints on either end...slim
