Nothing like 2 old timer's setting around taking trucks and neither one of us know what we are talking about. Have couple pic's 'unidentified tranny' in gallery, I believe to be an FXM, the other old timer said it's not but could not tell me which tranny he thought it is. Also, anyone know what's a 'cruise o matic'.
Best as can recall, I removed this thing from a 66 F250 and believe it to be an FXM. Have all the codes for the C3, what ever that is, the C4, and the C6, but no codes for the FXM. Actually, it was during my infancy stage of scrounging for parts when I pulled the tranny thinking it was a C6 only to be advised by either Banjopicker, or Fbp, he did not think it was. Anyhow, if anyone has a clue I would appreciate the input, think I may want to get rid of it at some point but not sure what to call it.

It is indeed a C-6, and it is for an FE.
A COM, FX or FMX would have a separate bell housing that unbolts from the case.
However, it wold not have come original from a '66 F-100; as best as I have been able to discover, the C-6 was first used in trucks in '67.
In fact it did come with a 2 piece drive shaft. It's been few years, can't recall which member, based on the description of the truck, thought it might be an FXM. Have not had time to start the project. Meantime have kept tranny outside and covered with a tarp. This is good news, not sure why, don't have any more time now than I did then to start another project. I did not expect it to be a C6, I'll keep it around for awhile to collect dust for awhile longer. Does anyone know if the FXM was also referred to as the 'Cruise O Matic'. Appreciate the info, I am stoked, thanks again.
The Ford-O-Matic, introduced in 1950, evolved into the Cruise-O-Matic in 1958, evolved into the MX/FX, then the FMX, and was finally dropped when the AOD was introduced about 1980.
C-6 was developed in '66, and used up to '96 in many different heavy duty applications. iwas essentially, internally, a beefed up C-4.
C-4 was used '64 - '82, when it was replaced by the C-5.
CruisOmatic kept that handle until 1966.
But CruisOmatic was a generic term and covered not only the cast iron transmissions but C4 and early C6.
The terminology changed in 1967 when they were called select shift.
Then the FMX came along, and the rest of the alphabet followed.
