Code P0705 on a 4R100 with OD

I took my van to Pep Boys & got the code read. It is for a transmission position sensor. Their advice was to go to a transmission shop. Is this located on the transmission & something that I can replace?

Added. The only thing that I can find in a online service book is a transmission range sensor. Is that what Pep Boys was talking about?

I don't notice any shifting difference only the idiot light on the dash.

The transmission position sensor is called an MLPS (manual lever position sensor) and it is mounted on the shift lever shaft on the drivers side of the transmission. If you need to replace it note that it must be adjusted so the scribed line on the outside is lined up while in neutral.

You won't find it by pulling the engine cover. Get under the van. It's on the driver's side. It is the part with the wiring harness attached on the driver's side of the transmission.

I found it, Motorcraft # SW5713 but I don't see any line for lining it up in neutral. Looks like you adjust it with the cable connector & it only has 2 bolts holding it on to a shaft going into the transmission.

The 2 bolts go through slotted holes. The scribe marks are easier to see on a new mlps. The dirt covers the marks up.

Your right, it is very clearly indicted on the new, clean part. I ordered it on eBay & received it the next day. A genuine Motorcraft SW-5713 part made in Mexico.

Now I need some good weather to put it on.

I guess that I need to reset the code. Can I just disconnect the battery to reset it?

Yes, you can disconnect the battery to reset the code. You can also ignore the code and it will go away on it's own. The light should be off when you start it with the new part in place.

I got it installed & no more code either. It sure was a lot of work just to limit starting the engine in park or neutral.

I had to take it to the automotive craft shop on post (military) & get it up on a lift as I could not pry it off the shaft with a screw driver. They had a really big screw driver that broke it off & then I broke off the ring that rotates with the shaft when you shift. That shaft was really caked up & had to be scraped off to get the new one to even fit over it. Both top & bottom grooved slots had to be scraped out as well. I slipped the new on on easily only to find that the metal insert for one bolt was in the wrong hole so I took a metal insert form the old one adding it to the open plastic hole of the MLPS.

Thanks for your advice & help. It works
