This is my first post here on FTE and i had a few questions about my truck. First off when i rev my engine between 3500 and 4000 rpms my battery light comes on and the lights dim. I do have a sound system in my truck so i'm thinking that the alternator is going? Also my truck has a little over 80,000 miles on it and was wondering if there is anything i should be checking over to keep it running for quite some time yet? Looks like a great site so far. Hope you guys can help me out.
I can't help you with the electrical problems, but the long-life question can be answered with one word: Maintenance. Check that baby every chance you get - crawl up under her and check out the places where the sun don't shine
The Maintenance Schedule is basic and necessary, but go that extra mile and check all bolts, screws, etc. Check spring hangers and such, too. Just a little here and there and it'll do you right. These Super Dutys are some tough trucks.
Enjoy the site. There's plenty of good folks here with great ideas and hints...and a truckload of BS now and then.
Sounds like the alternator to me! Although I have never heard of one failing in that particular way. Maybe it has a intermittent contact inside that opens up at a certain RPM. You may also want to check the external connections to the alternator before replacing it, though. Clean any corrosion found with a shot of WD. See what happens
i also installed a optima yellow top battery last summer to kinda help out with the system. i thought it would take care of the problem but it didn't. i will look at the connections and see what i can find.
F7 Firecat, Welcome to the site. I also have the 99 SD, SC, 4x4, V-10. I have 112k miles. I replaced the plugs, fuel filter and change my oil every 3k to 4k. I love this truck, you can't kill it. I need new shocks but I'm waiting till I get around to putting a lift on her....Good luck with yours.......
Welcome to FTE! Nice truck (love those V10's) and (I assume you have a F7) nice sled!
Alternator all the way. My alternator went in my '99 about 80k miles. It begins with the battery light flickering then after a few days it's on all the time. Have an impact gun handy when you go to change it in case your re-built one comes with the wrong pulley on it. These trucks, depending on the year, use a 6 rib or a 8 rib pulley. 1999's (mine anyway) used an 8 rib, my 2003 has a 6 rib. This would be a good time to change the belt also.
If you're at 80k and the plugs haven't been changed plan on doing it soon. Cruise down to the "V10" forum a little further down the index page and search for the procedure; it's very, very important to follow the procedure and to have a torque wrench. (The owner's manual calls for a plug change at 60k miles so while you're not hurting anything you are due). Plug torque is only 14 ft lbs and anything more you'll strip the threads out of the aluminum head
I currently have an F150 with the 5.4 and need more truck for a camper hauler. What are the pros/cons with the F250 package?
I'm biased All pros/no cons except for maybe slightly worse fuel economy. The F250/F350 out hauls and out tows anything else available from anybody. The F150 is the best half ton but to carry a camper it will be tough to stay within the payload range. An F350 with the camper package would be the best thing but you're buying used you could make your own by getting a F350 and putting a rear sway bar on it from Hellwig and upgrading the front springs.
Yeah dmp437 i do have an F7. I like the sled alot. Very fast! If we had some snow in wisconsin here i could put it to more use though. Thanks for the advice guys. I thought it was the alternator but now i know for sure. The engine light is also on now. Would the whole alternator thing cause this to go on or would it be something else? Truck still runs like a champ so i don't think its anything major. Any info on the engine light would be cool.
