have a new 04 escape. a/c is acting strange. around town at low speed, all is fine. on highway or at high enging speeds, stops cooling. does not matter if on regular or max a/c. once off the highway, it slowly returns to normal. i've noticed that when the problem occurs, a/c compressor cycles on and off a lot and only stays on for a second or so. also, a/c compressor is LOUD when this is happening. can't normally hear it very much.
I think that there is a engine speed control for the compressor that disingages it when the motor is revved for passing.. I may be defective and not allowing the compressor to stay ingaged at highway speeds...Just a thought... The dealer will sort it out, but don't wait untill the compressor's clutch gets burned up from excessive ingagements..
I have the same issue. Bought a vacuum hand pump and checked each component in the system under the dash and hood. Everything was fine EXCEPT the vacuum line that supplies vacuum to the interior. The default (with no vacuum) is to the defroster vents. At town speeds, the throttle position seems such that the engine developes enough vacuum to outrun the leaky hose. At highway speeds, the leak outruns the engines vacuum. Try this: when the air starts to switch from the dash panel vents and makes more noise, let off the gas pedal for about two (2) seconds. You should notice the air suddenly switches back to the dash vents. Happens evertime for me, confirming the leak. For air to come out the dash vents, three (3) vacuum pots need to be held with around 10-15 lbs. of vacuum (four(4) if in MAX AC. It's in the high 90's in OK so I haven't tried this on HEATER yet!! Anyway, the hose is about $24 from the dealer. Ordered mine a week ago and still waiting to see if they can get it. Being able to reach the thing to replace it when it comes in could be a whole different issue.
