With the weather in the South being HOT (90's), I wanted to find out if I should be using A/C or windows down on the highway.
I googled this and got a lot of hits. But these tests are performed on normal cars and not a Hybrid.
My 2009 Escape Hybrid has the real time energy/fuel monitor. I know when I turn on the A/C it goes down. If I'm on the highway under 40 or stopped (hey this is Atlanta), and press A/C the engine comes on.
So any thoughts on highway driving (when not stopped or slow) if there is a huge difference in mileage when using A/C vs. windows down?
I've never seen tests/results with a hybrid but on a regular vehicle a/c is usually slightly better, plus more comfortable.
I would guess if you're worried about milage that much an all electric is in your future.
I would base my decision on my own comfort and health. Pulling in dirt and allergens from open windows, along with soaking my clothing and seats with sweat, is not worth saving a few cents on gasoline. If I need to take an extra shower and wash sweaty clothing when I get home after a hot trip, there is the cost of water and soap and I'll bet that cost exceeds the cost of any gas saved. I had many non-air conditioned cars in the old days and they were miserable... I could even make the case that when I was miserably hot, I had less ability to maintain my focus on safety while driving.
Do you use AC in your home? That is definitely a cost item but I do not hesitate to use our home or car AC to make myself comfortable and reduce my exposure to allergens (I am an asthmatic).
In the grand scheme of things, I don't think any extra cost of running the AC is a big deal.
