Ok heres the deal. Last night, i started the truck and the key slid out of the lock cylinder. I put the key back in and tried to turn the truck off. It didnt work. The cylinder moved freely and was not moving the igintion rod. I took apart the dash and removed the steering wheel and purchased a new key lock cylinder. When i removed the old key lock cylinder, to my surprise it was not the culprit. I noticed that when I turned the key, the ignition rod was not moving up and down, thus not hiting the ignition switch and not starting the truck. I did eveything i could to see why the ignition rod was not moving. I could not find anything.
I need help quick. Monday is coming fast and I have to get to work. LOL.
If theres anything you guys might suggest please let me know.
I have seen the rod itself broken.
Matter of fact one of the guys at work had the rod break last month, was stranded in the parking lot til he replaced it.
If the rod is broken, you can move it yourself to stop it or get going.
There is a tab on the end of the ignition cylinder that turns a gear, this gear (round with teeth on it) pushes the shaft (flat with teeth on one side) like a rack and pinion gear set up.
One of the three are not functioning properly, it's probably missing a tooth on the shaft letting the gear turn freely.
The lock cylinder is the most likely though.
There is a pin underneath the ignition that you push (! With the key in the run position only!) to unlock the cylinder so you can pull it out to check the cylinder and reach in to get the snap ring out holding the gear (! pay attention to the gears exact installation position for reassembly!) and it's retaining washer in place.
If they look good (the tab turns firmly with the position of the key) and the gear looks good, it's the shaft.
