Where is the key return spring located?

1983 F250, 460, Auto, A/C. The key does not return automatically from start position. Is the return spring part of the key cylinder, in the column, or part of the ignition switch?
thanks.

That's a good question. It's not part of the lock assembly, since all it does is release when the key is inserted. I am not sure, but I think it's part of the column itself. If you spray a little wd40 down in the keyswitch/column area, it will help your problem(which all the early Fords seem to have). I replaced my ignition switch for another problem I had, and noticed the detents seemed more defined after that.

In the ignition switch. It's a rather large switch and is spring loaded. But probably what is hanging up is the leverage that operates the ignition switch when you turn the key. If you carefully remove the key lock switch (follow the instructions in your Haynes Manual), you can see the detent which operates the ignition switch. Squirt a little wd-40 in the detent. Reinsert the key lock switch and operate it several times. If this doesn't free it up then you will probably have to replace your ignition switch.

Something could be jaming up the rod that works the electrical ignition switch (not the key switch), or the spring itself in the ignition, or the ignition itself failing internaly (I found 70% of the time).
