Fuel Line From Carb to Mechanical Pump - Options?

Hey guys,

Looking for some suggestions and/or advice on planning for my fuel line routing from the carb to the mechanical pump. The machine shop set me up with a nice braided AN system. It's a -8AN male outlet from the carb and the Holley fuel pump has a 1/4" NPT fitting on the outlet. It's a tight fit down by the pump with a clearance issue due to the Saginaw style pump. Two options as I see it.

1. 90 degree 1/4" NPT to -8AN adapter coming out of the fuel pump outlet and hope there's enough room to spin it into the fuel pump and then attach the -8AN female fitting on the braided hose that will run up to the carb.
2. 1/4" NPT to 3/8 barb adapter, hope for clearance there, and then run rubber EFI hose up to the carb with the requisite barb to -8AN adapter. My concern with this is that it will look bad, and I'm not exactly a fan of rubber on the pressure side of the pump even though I am using EFI rated hose.
3. Bend a hard line and use the requisite adapters on either end.

Any thoughts? Other options? Pics below.

Why not get the actual OEM hard line and plum it that way? It "should" come off the mech fuel pump, make a sweeping 90* tucking back towards the dvrs side head, then head up in front of the dvrs side head, go around the back side of the distributor and then end up in front of the pretty blue anodized fitting.

Now I have not search for a OEM line (on -line) in a while because I have parts trucks that have them and when I have to take them off, I am careful.

OEM style hard line is available in stainless steel from Bronco Graveyard. I used one of these to replace my original fuel line and it worked very well. I needed to make a few minor bends to get it to fit perfectly but thus far, no leaks or problems. Here is the link:

Several thousand miles on my truck after installing this fuel line and I am very pleased.

Original hardline won’t work without some serious modification due to the inlet and outlet on the Holley pump being different than the stock pump. The inlet and outlet are reversed and the outlet threads are 1/4NPT not 3/8 NPT. I’m afraid that all of the straightening and bending I would have to do would just end up breaking the line. I’ll have to use adapter fittings anyway if I use hardline since I don’t think I can get a tight enough bend on the fuel pump outlet to clear the power steering pump. The outlet is the hole that’s staring at you in the picture. After all that trouble and cost of the necessary fittings/adapters, I’m probably close to the money and effort of just fabbing up some braided line.

Looks like it may be possible to re-clock the fuel pump lower portion. I run metal from a pump up to the intake, then transition to a rubber line where plainly visible, with a metal body fuel filter. Plain steel will outlive us all. 3/8" in a stick from a box store brake tube rack..

Reclocking will make it worse. In one direction, the outlet will interfere with the water pump neck. In the other, the inlet will be inaccessible.

I think I'm going to go the 8AN braided route. I think it will look pretty good. I'll post some pics when I'm done. Thanks for taking the time to reply gents.

This is what I did.

Since I'm running an edelbrock and a stock fuel pump ( 1/4" NPT as well I believe) I decided to run the Edelbrock fuel line with built in filter to a 5/16 Earl's adapter and 5/16 metal line to the required flared fitting (bent line and flared it myself).

I am also running a Saginaw which isn't installed in this pic but the line clearance the pump and distributor well and looks pretty clean if I say so myself.

I'll see if I have another pic or vid and post it.

Screenshot of a vid I made a while back shows the installed fuel line with distributor.

https://youtube.com/shorts/2vnR2dNn2IM?feature=share

In this short you can see that the Saginaw is installed but no pulley yet. AC compressor clears fine also but it's not installed in this vid. Mine is clearly still a work in progress.

In a fuel system, I'd just bend up some hard line. IMO, it's safer in the long term. Plus, I'm not a fan of flex hoses/lines except where I need some movement.

On my project, which is basically a mild 390 build using the stock type fuel pump and a dual line Holley, I made up my own hard lines from pump to carb.

I did something similar. I haven’t got to the power steering pump yet but I think it’ll clear; will adjust if it doesn’t. I still have a few more adjustments to get the final configuration but for now it works. Looks nice and clean IMO.

120° fitting off the pump

Waiting on the clamps to show up

I need a taller 90° for the heater hose. It’s not a hard contact but the heater and fuel hoses are pressing against each other. The fuel hose fitting is also contacting the manifold; thinking about a thicker carb spacer to gain a bit of clearance here as well.

Nice. Looks great. Thanks for the feedback.

Where did you get that polished heater hose fitting for the intake manifold. I like that.
