Mechanical Fuel Pump: which is the inlet?

I got this replacement fuel pump from NAPA yesterday. No instructions. I can't seem to unscrew the filter casing to observe the internals.

My old pump looked identical to this, except that the old one has the two ports side-by-side. The new replacement unit has one port above the other.

I need to know which of these two ports is the inlet, and which one goes to the carb.

Bottom is in/ top is out. I had to get an adapter for the outlet to go from npt threads to 3/8 flare fitting type but you could get a Barb fitting.

Here's mine. Mine took a 1/8 mpt X 5/16" inverted flare for the hard line going to the carb.
