Replacing a bad starter. I know there is a seal which is referred to as a "Starter to Flywheel seal" Which way is it installed? What is the purpose of this seal? The starter mates up to the bell housing without the seal or gasket. I read somewhere that this "seal" has to be put on correctly. What is correctly?
Also; the bendix can be corrected if it has spun out, right? What causes the bendix to spin out? I've done the spin technique on a bench grinder with wire wheel and it worked, but the bendix spun out again. Does the bendix need to be lubed?
I know these are somewhat silly questions, I've searched every forum for these questions looking for answers.
I hope someone can educate me on the "Starter Bendix" and the "Starter to Flywheel Seal"
Thanks to all who reply
I've never seen any reason to use that seal, I've changed many many starters since 1965 on Y blocks without it.. It may be helpful in extreme wet/dirt conditions.
Bendix is a GM name LOL. What do you consider spun out? I've installed them with it spun out, The gear should be at the farthest distance from the starter. gear closes to the starter and it corrects its self with the first start of the engine unless it's just a bad one. You can't spin it out your self

Your of no help. Your knowledgeable on a lot of things but I can tell this not your expertise. If the Starter Bendix is a GM thing, what's it called on a Ford Starter? Everywhere you look or reference Ford starter for the yblock the Ford Bendix is there. Just as the Starter to flywheel seal is referenced. The seal is needed and should be installed correctly, what is correct? It would have been nice if you offered help instead of being condescending but you are who you are. Do not escalate this thread to be a whipping thread if you can't offer help, don't say anything.
Anyone knowledgeable on starters, bendix and seals, please chime in.
Thank you
