Belt tensioner assembly

It's simple...

I can get the Litens with a lifetime warranty for about $80 from advance auto...

Or I can get a Motorcraft with 2 year warranty (but I'll probably have to pay to ship it in if I use the warranty) for about $75.

I've heard great things from you guys about the Motorcraft, but I love lifetime warranties. Anybody know much about Litens?

Let me know soon. Need to buy one in the next couple days.

Thanks.
Brett

I bought mine from Ford, they matched Clay’s price and I needed it now. I’m assuming the one I took off was original with 350,000 miles on it. Only reason it needed to be replaced is the breaker bar didn’t seat properly and I broke the socket part...

Replaced mine with a Gates unit at 260,733 miles back in Dec 2013. Still going strong at 352,370 miles.

Well... it seems like a split crowd. I appreciate the quick responses. I ended up going with the Litens Lifetime option for $10 more than I could get the OEM one for.

I don't know why I think I'll have this truck longer than the 200,000 miles that the Motorcraft version would most likely last, but if I ever have problems - I can exchange this one.

Thanks again for the responses!

A local diesel shop told me that my random howling sound at 3000 rpm was the belt slipping. They strongly recommended OEM, claiming it has stronger tension. I found the OEM tensioner for $62 on Rock Auto. I have yet to test the truck to see if it fixes the noise.

I wanted to report back...

The Litens from Advance with the Lifetime Warranty did not feel as tight as the OEM - and I tried to make sure it wasn't a placebo (knowing the comment above). I hope that weaker spring does not cause problems in the future, but I'll keep an eye (and ear) out for any howling. I'm hoping the additional tension was a results of the old OEM tensioner being cocked and putting added tension on the spring. I will try to put a picture on here for those following this thread of the shape of my old one.

Lock-tight is not recommended for the bolt, right? And I read somewhere the torque was supposed to be around 32 ft-lbs? I'm using a 8" wrench (2/3rds of a foot), so I tried to push out near the end about as much as I thought ~48-50 pounds was?

32 sounds about right and blue lock tight is probably not a bad idea. I replaced mine with the Motorcraft because the bearings were getting bad, but the tensioner itself was fine.

Good idea is to replace that big single tensioner pulley also since that also has a bearing that will go bad and get noisy. Not expensive.

I did put a new belt on. I've read a lot that talks about making sure you do that at the same time.

Here's the pictures of the old tensioner I promised...

Also, an update - I've been driving the truck and it's not shredding any more belts recently.

Thanks for your input.

That one looks like it was shot. Good thing you changed it before it came apart.

Hey guys, I’ve been just replacing the pulley bearings in the serpentine belt system except for the actual tensioner ***’y one. Once you replace the first set of pulleys you can then just replace the individual bearings, they are all the same size on my ‘02. Then when you replace the belt, simply replace the pulleys and start over. You may have to make two “punch out” points on the side with a flange, no big deal though. I find the bearings and either on line or at a local bearing supply house. The China made are less expensive than made in America. I have even removed one seal and repacked the bearing - appears to work just fine unless I mess the seal up removing it or installing it.

Yup. 6203 bearings. Don’t forget to install the replacement bearings with bearing retaining compound. This would not have fixed the OP’s failed tensioner though.
