‘55 F250 build thread - Roots Up

I have posted several times and shared a few of these pics wanted to start a build thread to keep everything in one place. I bought this truck back in September or October out of Wichita KS. For various reasons it has taken me until now to get it back to my house in MA. I still hav not seen the truck personally. It was delivered and a friend got it into my garage. So you are all seeing exactly hat I have seen so far! SInce I don’t live there full time yet this is going to be a very slow build.

Stats:
  • F250
  • 223
  • 4.86 rear
  • Paint code C - Aquatone blue
  • 4 Speed
  • Mileage unknown

Current State:

  • Engine is seized- I sourced a running replacement. Have yet to check compression etc. on that motor. It is sitting on a pallet in the garage.
  • Passenger and driver’s windows were replaced in KS with new safety glass windows
  • Bed is in rough shape but a sheet of plywood looks like it would temporarily solve the problem.
  • Interior looks pretty good but I am told there have been Lott’s of mice living in there......
  • I am told there is virtually no Rot on the body except the tailgate which I want to replace anyway since it has a grain door in it.
Plans:

  • I do not plan to restore this truck. I plan to use it as an around town hauler. That means that cosmetically not much will change. The areas of focus will be:
  • Brakes- I am pretty sure I want to upgrade to front discs. From reading on here it seems that by he time I get my xisiting ones sorted out I will have spent a fair amount towards a disc set up. Short story, get the braking system up to safe status’s.
  • Engine will be replaced.
  • Clan up engine bay and make it neat and tidy and replace anything unreliable or unsafe
  • Evaluate wiring for safetY
  • Return interior to as nice a state as possible without over restoring it. Replace seats, clean up dash as necessary and may ens sound dead an the cab. Rubber floor mats..I may add a heater if there is not one in there already.
  • Evaluate suspension and replace rubber as necessary as well as assess Kingpins
  • At some point replace bed wood. Nothing fancy, utility quality.
  • Repalce door seals/weatherstripping
  • Replace front windshield it’s safety glass
  • Install seat belts

This is my first v hicle of this vintage and my first Ford and my first truck. Please feel free to share any opinions, suggestions, things to look out for or be aware of on these vehicles. I have been restoring and driving a 1978 Z28 since 1992 Andy I know every vehicle has its idiosyncrasies and little tricks or issues that you don’t know about if you are not familiar with the vehicle.

Looking forward to the journey and learning from everyone on here and will share what I can as I learn as well!

If you are not doing a restore, I'd vote to keep the tailgate for the cool-conversation piece that it is.

I would defenitly keep the tail gate if only to hang it in the garage. I remember seeing that alot up in Ne growing up I think my Grandpa had one on his 47 tonner. Good luck on the build.

I agree. It will be hard to find a a tailgate of that color and amount of patina to match .

Neat truck. Thanks for the pics. I think you posted some before. It looks like Harriers 55 F250 flatbed.

Your interior (dash and doors look great!) Good cab corners, running boards, etc.

Nice looking truck. I believe the color is actually Sea Sprite Green.
Is that rear original? Mine came with a Dana 60. Is that a timpken rear?
It looks a lot like mine except for the bed. Looking forward to your progress.

Great looking truck. I would even get a 102 inch fishpole antenna to fit on that mount. And maybe even a mic to fit in that holder, And maybe even a radio to go with it. That truck is too nice as is to do to much restoration work on it.
Your stated plans are about what I would do to it. I may beat those dents out but not refinish anything. If you could find an old school body man, he could make those places look pretty darn good.

I just noticed you have 2 batteries, one in the stock location under the passenger side floor and one added in the engine bay.... Is the one in the engine bay 12 volt to operate the CB radio?

VIN is F25D. I believe D for 55 is Waterfall blue.

I believe everything on the truck is original. I have no idea what the rear end is yet. I haven't even seen it in person. Not familiar yet how to identify the different Ford rears but will get some pictures so I can get some help figuring it out. 4.86 rear according to the VIN plate.

D means it is a 6 cylinder. The color code is found elsewhere on the data plate.

Here is my 55 data plate. You see the color code on the second line.
