Two things.

Hi, I'm finally getting down to the nitty gritty on my truck. Firstly I've seen it covered but I can't remember if it was here...the alt brackets for my 460 are car (lincoln) and it sits low. Has anyone got away with running it that way in a 73-79? I've searched for affordable steel truck stuff with no luck. On a separate note, I have a bad cab mount. I ordered one from key parts and it is horrible quality imo. Any suggestions? Do the make a cap to get me by?

The aftermarket cab mounts you get from most all vendors (including Dennis Carpenter) are Taiwanese crap, to put it bluntly. Try Flashback F100's - Home for an actual real steel cab mount.....or a "slip-on" cab mount to get you through.

Speaking of cab mounts - how do you guys know when one is bad? How exactly do they work? Do they go through a hole somewhere in the cab sheet metal?

Just take a peek behind your front wheels (if you have plastic wheel well liners you may need to pry them back) and the cab mounts will be exposed. It's pretty obvious when they're bad, they will eventually start collapsing upon themselves and the cab will sink.

I know a lot of "old timers" use to take off the inspection plate and fill the cab mounts with gear oil as a preventative rust measure.....couldn't hurt I suppose.

Pretty much anything and everything made of rubber on these old trucks is trash after 20 to 30 years. Problem today is some of the replacement parts available are not made with the "good stuff" like they were. New cab mounts, transmission & engine mounts make for a noticeable improvement in ride quality and noise.
