Is this fuel filter a good idea?

I keep seeing this ad and wonder -- do you guys use this filter? Is it a good idea, or a waste of money?

Thanks

You will get different options on this subject.

I use one. It's a piece of mind for me.

Several of the long time regulars here use it, Roy can tell you all about it.

I think it's too expensive.

I've got one on my truck. It is expensive. But for how picky these fuel systems are, it is peace of mind for me. Is it helping? I dont know. I feel like it is.

I have one on my truck. I have never seen any water in the filters nor the stock filter.

I was able to find one on eBay that was almost new and removed from a truck the guy traded. I was fortunate to buy it for $350.

Does it help? Can't say but does give peace of mind with the concerns on the cost of replacing the fuel system due to water damage being in the $7000 to $9000 range.

I use one, never seen any water yet. It just takes once though. this filter will plug off if you take on a large amount of water at a unfortunate fuel stop when travelling.

While there are filters that have fancy names like "hyrdoblock", I don't think there are any that will actually plug before letting any water through. Neither Dahl/Baldwin, nor Racor make those claims. The extra filters seem like a good idea, in part because the bowl is transparent and that allows frequent inspection. But I don't think they are an absolute guarantee against water in the fuel rail - just some extra help.

I wish the stock lower fuel filter casing was clear... I don't use the dieselsite filter setup and I can't see where extra filtration hurts. Being able to look at the fuel would be nice, rather than draining some into a glass.

My only concern is if you had a fuel issue, the dealer will point to it and say it caused it. Then you get to prove it didn't. If you don't have one, they'll still blame it on poor fuel or water in fuel. If it's water in the fuel and you have full coverage, your auto insurance may cover it, many have had their insurance cover it, many have had it denied. This is one of those PITA things about a diesel that you don't hear about in a gas truck. Hopefully, none of us have to go through it.

Just like my extended warranty, I bought it so I can sleep at night and know while I am paying a note on my truck if I have a major repair it should be covered. Hope the dealer and Ford wins and I never need to use it.

180,000 miles on my truck and I don't have one nor have I had any fuel related issues. Change the filters every 20,000 miles.

A couple of things to consider, since you are driving a '17. I haven't looked to see if Dieselsite has said whether they are making these systems to fit a '17+ yet, and don't know if the connections are the same. I would doubt the mounting is the same for a '17+, versus '11-'16 at least. Perhaps they have a redesign out for yours.
Secondly, supposedly, the new stock filtration system on the '17+ is better at knocking out the water - when and if you get any.

I - like others - decided to spend the money for the peace of mind. I have never seen any water in ANY of my filters - stock or supplemental - but it is nice to be able to see with a quick glance, what my fuel looks like, and if there is any sediment or water in the bowls.
