What do I need to completely replace rear tank, and....

Rear tank hasn't been used in a looong time, all of the lines and hardware are completely rusted through and completely FULL of very bad gas.

2 Questions:

1) Would someone please help me with a complete shopping list to replace this tank?

2) Where do I dump 19 gallons of bad gas?

Thanks

Cheap easy route is order a metal replacement from about any parts store. Time to consider a standard 19 gal, versus an upgrade to 38 gal. Means different or modded pick up tube and float arm.

Or 1973-79 Ford Pickup, Rear Mount, w/ Roll Over Valve, 19 gal-gastanks.com

Or even better, MTS plastic. Available with or with out EMS hole on top. MTS 4250 Plastic Fuel / Gas Tank for 1973-1979 Ford pickup 19 gallon tank EMS hole on top at Gas Tank Depot.com

New sending unit, most auto parts stores carry them, or https://shop.broncograveyard.com/197...PP4aAlPE8P8HAQ

I am sure your support straps are ok. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...250&vi=5006246

Filler neck hose.1973-1979 F100 F150 F250 Fuel Tank Filler Neck Hose D5TZ9047D

Fuel lines. http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_tr...and-hoses.html

Even old gas burns, or ask a oil changing place if they will take it off your hands. I am sure that will cost ya a few bucks.

Fuel tank drop 101. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post14696841

Make sure you know which tank you have - with or without the emission lines to the charcoal filter (passenger side, under alternator). Most part listings will say with or without EEC.

Line your support straps with old rubber tubes or canvas straps.

I can take old gas to my local garage - they put it in with oil that is being recycled.

There should be disposal sites in or near your town that will take old gas. May not be free, though.

I got the tank and hardware I needed - including under tank supports - from LMC truck. They seem to have a pretty complete offering.

As mentioned, its a good time to choose between standard 19 gallon and 38 gallon. With 19 gallon all parts are available and work as supplied. With 38 gallon, customization of the fuel pickup is needed and the fuel gauge will be "unusual". I like my 38 gallon tank and longer range though it was a bit of a project. There are lots of posts covering 38 gallon install.

If you are going the 19 Gal way and sticking with metal Rockauto has the best prices I found, and its what I used on my truck. I degreased and painted the exterior of mine to keep it fresher longer. that being said the time and energy to do so would have been worth just going with the 100 bucks for a plastic tank.

No such thing as EEC on any truck/Bronco/Econoline of this era. No 1973/78 Passenger Car had it either.

The only reason EEC (Electronic Engine Control system aka on board computer) is listed in the 1973/79 Ford car parts catalog, is because some 1979 LTD's with 351W's came with it.

What you're actually referring to is the Evaporative Emission system, abbreviated ev/em

  • Replacement tank (Prime & paint or spray with bedliner before installation)
  • Sender with float (Nitrophyl)
  • Tank straps
  • Tank strap insulation (canvas, EPDM, or weatherstrip foam)
  • New fuel-compatible hose
  • Fuel neck hose
  • New hose clamps

... and a six pack of your favorite adult beverage for afterwards. Maybe a Tiparillo or Swisher Sweet too.
