Not hard. Held up by two straps. Hardest part is getting the fuel lines and fuel filler hose disconnected reconnected. Can get new tanks from LMC Truck for around $125 plus shipping.

Also make sure the tank is as empty as possible. I know It sounds obvious but try to siphon as much gas out as possible. Depending on rusted the bolts are on the the straps it is a pretty easy job. I painted my new tank hoping it would last a little longer.

Autozone, advance auto part, and napa can get them for about the same price. Took me a couple of hours, as I replaced the sending unit as well......and I work slow.......

Hardest part I would say would be getting the old bolts out that hold the straps on, if they are rusted. Since its a 1984 its a carbed truck, the fuel line should just be a rubber line with one clamp. The fuel injection motors have the disconnects that are a pain. The filler hose just needs to be removed from the bedside to allow you pull it down and connect to the tank first then reconnect to the bedside. I've replaced two gas tanks one fuel injection on a 92 F150 and carbed on my 82 F100.

I started spraying the bolts and brushing them with a wire brush about a month before I replaced the tank............bolts came right out, no problem.......

Replacement Gas Tanks

Goudey -

I replaced both tanks on my '81 F150 after trying to clean the old ones (rusty inside). Definitely not worth the effort to try and salvage...... Anyway, I ordered the new tanks from Quanta Products (www.QuantaProducts.com), (410) 658-5700. Tanks were $104.00 for the rear and $105.00 for the side, plus $38.00 for shipping.

I agree with the suggestions given in other responses.

Good luck.

I had to cut one strap that held the tank. Actually, it was easier to do that instead of the bolt that held the strap. Just couldn't get to it. I got a rear tank off of eBay for about 85 bucks. The fuel lines are very convenient once you get the shield off and can let the tank drop a little. I had to drop mine to replace the pump and clean the tank because someone sugared or pissed in my tank. Oh, well...

Tank replacing is fairly easy. Be sure to mark hoses and wires before removing to ease installation.
