reinstalled the engine, big noise from the transmission

I just finished putting the engine back in my 94 F150, 5.0 after replacing the oil pan. I didn't remove the automatic transmission when I pulled the motor. I did have some difficulty aligning the trans and the motor during reinstallation, but it did all line up eventually. When I start the truck now, there is an awful racket from the flex plate/torque converter area, something is hitting something else.I suppose somehow the flex plate or the torque converter is out of alignment...any ideas?

Before you tightened the nuts on the converter studs to lock the flex plate and converter together, could you freely turn the converter, within the confines of the flex plate stud holes? That's kind of hard to word...but if the converter was bound up it likely wasn't seated into the pump of the trans properly, and unfortunately that may mean the pump is trashed.

Pull the inspection plate and look inside. Pull the starter and inspect it too. If you don't get a fixable answer there you'll need to pull the transmission, or the engine, whichever is easier for you.

The convertor studs might have lined up with the wrong holes (there are some larger ones that will line up with the studs) and pulled free.

the converter turned freely, and there's nothing glaringly obvious visible with the inspection plate removed. I suppose the most logical thing is to pull the trans. I'm getting tired of this project!

So it turns out that I didn't have the torque converter properly seated...after I got that issue resolved things went together fairly well. I ended up replacing the oil pan, oil pump, oil pressure sending unit, power steering pump and hoses, starter, spark plugs, idler pulley, a few hardened vacuum lines, and the drive belt. Now it seems to be leak free, quiet, and running well. With any luck, no more projects on this truck for a while.

Your transmission is working? I've never heard of an engine being run with the TC not seated in the pump and the pump surviving it.

Usually the pump and converter get destroyed when the trans to engine bolts pull the trans to the engine. The end of the converter smashes the pump, and the snout of the converter also gets damaged.
