ok i have a 1969 scout 800a aristocrat (one of 2500) and i have decided that i want a ford instead so i'm selling all the parts and buying a 1986 f250 2 door for $200.00 yes $200.00 and all i know is that it is a 2 door not extended cab or anything because i havent seen it yet. (my dad told me about it)
and i was wondering if you guys/girls could give me any ideas. i want it very lifted with probably 44's and i want to know whats the best lift combination and power upgrades and all the goodies.it has a 460 but my funds are rather limited considering i'm only 14 and my mom doesnt want another car in the yard so a little and it'll be in. Thanks for the help/ideas in advance
Take it easy! On your budget, you can't do "very lifted" very safely or very quickly anyway, so relax. Just drive it and get a feel for it. As you have money, fix the little things first, and work your way up to the big stuff slowly. The most important thing is maintenance. If it doesn't run, you can't enjoy a lift and big tires anyway, so concentrate on making it 100% reliable before making it less streetable.
well my budget isnt that limited. i have a job thats getting me 300 a week for the summer and the probably more than 1000 for the scout parts plus my 300 in the bank. also i would VERY much appreciate the specs of the truck. thanks in advance
If it's an F-250... it can have any motor in it from a 300 I-6 to the 6.9 Diesel. Sounds like a nice truck. It it has the TTB independant front suspension (IIRC, it does), then you'll have to swap it out for a straight axle if you wanna go over 6" of lift. Check it out for rust and make sure the frame isn't cracked.
A $200 '86 F-250 is going to need $500 worth of front end work done before / during the lift. I love my IFS, don't get me wrong, but in order to lift them CORRECTLY you need to go through your ball joints, bearings, seals, radius arm bushings, axle pivot bushings, EVERYTHING. I've never done it, but perhaps someone here has, can you actually control 44's with an IFS?
There's a guy on another BBS I use that has plenty of action pics of him throwing 30' rooster tails and jumping ~8' with VERY big tires on a D44IFS. I don't remember exactly what size the tires are because I'm just not interested in them or lifts, but everyone else on that BBS is impressed. I think the topic was discussed a couple of days ago...
Found it: "Oh, btw, any of you remember HHH who used to lurk here? He ran 44" Boggers on the TTB and he posted plenty of pics to prove that it handled the mud quite nicely " http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/s...=5&o=31&fpart=
Well then I say rock on! IMHO IFS would be better for mud anyway. An F-250 is going to have a 55 not a 44 I believe and that's even better. Only thing I was concerned about was road drivability. My Bronco has 35's w/ 44IFS and it handles GREAT both on and off the road. Even though it is only on the road about 1% of it's driving time.
Just like Steve83 said. I would concentrate on making the new truck road worthy first. What engine does the F250 have right now, does it run? First thing I would go after would be the brakes, a truck of that age is bound to have brake problems once you start driving it especially off road. Next go after the suspension, heck do the front end one week and the rear the next or whatever order you want. The point is do it in little bits at a time, it will be easier on your wallet. Good luck and have fun!
As for the rebuild. My advice would be to check with a few machine shops near you and see what kinds of deals they can make for you. Try to go with a reputable shop, ask around to find out who does the best work for the money. When I rebuilt my 300 six, the shop I went through set me up with the exact parts I wanted to go with in my rebuild kit. What are you looking to build your 460 to do? You can also find rebuild kits for that motor in Summit and Jegs catalogs.

An F250 is going to have a 55?? 55 what? I bet he is referring to a dana 50 ifs. F250's came with dana 44 ifs hd and dana 50's. My friends 85 F250 had a dana 70 rear and dana 44 up front while my 86 has a sterling 10.25 and a dana 50. The 44 is much smaller and weaker than a 50 which uses all dana 60 components from the knuckles out and a bigger center section.
I just figured it out - My 87 F-250 is a Diesel so it has the Dana 55 IFS or 50 which ever is right. It is MUCH bigger than the 44 that is under my Bronco.
would a 6 inch suspension lift and a 3 inch body lift clear 44" tires? what is the best BIG tire (not 36's or smaller) for all around driveability including snow??? also how would i tell what the axles are?? we will be bringing it home soon so i can really check it out. how do you tell if it has IFS?? is it coil springs that make the difference? if it is IFS then what axle from what truck would you reccomend for a solid axle swap?? thanks
