i found a dana 44 out 0f a 70s f150 and its solid. i was wondering if i could swap that into my truck and if it would work well/ be strong enough. thanks
You might as well keep the one thats in there. A SA dana 44 is a downgrade from a Dana 50 since you'd have to do a heck of a lot of work to put it in, and it won't be any stronger.
Look for an 85.5-97 Dana 60 from an F-350. That is the only thing easy to swap, and it makes the most since. None of the 70's solid axles will fit without a lot of mods..
Axles, what fun, in my 83' it lists the axle as a 55, but bearings, and parts are the same as a 44 internally,
my 83' f250 will run 35's , the only modification was I replaced the front leaf springs with the heaviest stock springs I could get, so the truck rides level instead of low to the front...
if you build that 460 up, the C6 might take the pounding, and if you go to heavier axles they might take it as well, but then you should think about building new driveshafts with the biggest yokes for the heaviest duty U-joints you can get...
and with 44's you might want to think about beefing up the brakes, ....
Always remember the truck is only as strong as the weakest link....

Those 44s won't last long on the pavement, not to mention you will lose what little gas mileage you already have. A truck like that is not the most pleasant to drive on the road nor is it even practical for everyday usage. You will need to do a lot of work to strengthen the brake system for driving in heavy traffic. I am not trying to discourage you from building your dream truck, believe my dream truck is of very similar size to yours. You need to take into concideration what will be most practical. I just thought I would give you a few things to take into concideration before you go too far into your project. I hope everything works out for you, and good luck!
If it was I, I'd swap the Dana 60 on the front, and run 38s. 38s are about as big as you want to run on a Dana 60, unless you want to spend about $3000 in CTM cyro shafts and u-joints. The dana 60s will handle 44s, but they axle-shafts will still snap when you get on them too much.
Not to mention have you recently looked into the cost of a set of 44x19.5 Boggers yet$$$$$$$$$? We're not trying to discourage you from building big, but this advice could save you a few bucks in the long run! Good Luck and have fun!
