trans issues

the problem I have is the truck won't move in o/d. If I put it in revers 1,and 2 it works.
A little back ground. 4 years ago the trans went out of my 95 4.0 4x4, had it rebuilt so it has 0 miles on it. It got really cold that winter had lots of trouble getting the trans and torque converter lined up. motor went bad on me. A few months ago finally had some money to spend bought a 98 explorer sport with a 4.0 x code motor. the motor runs fine apart from an oil leak and an exhaust leak. the exhaust leak is no big deal I just haven't gotten the system tight yet.

Just drive it without the O/D.

O/D is for saving fuel at cruising speed.

Are you sure on the trans? That it got rebuilt and not just a junkyard pull that was used to replace the trans from your truck?

when I put in drive nothing happens, and yes it was rebuilt. It had been sitting around waiting for me to get a new engine

Thats terrible advise.

Most likely what is going on is the valve body was not rebuilt properly and there is a fluid leak that causes a drop in pressure when the regular drive circuits are engined (these circuits need pressure to operate). You need to pull the valve body apart, and look closely at the valves to make sure they are installed correctly, look at the bores to make sure they are not worn excessively, and when it gets put back together, make sure you have a new valve body gasket, and that it gets torqued properly.

I read somewhere that the trans pump is easy to screw up when you install the transmission. How likely is it to be I messed up the trans pump, and is there an easy way to check it. Like removing a coolant line from the radiator etc.
More back ground at some point the shaft that runs through the pump got out of alignment, and was pressed into the planetary gears. Don't know when this happened but it is the main reason I had so much trouble getting the trans installed properly. It wasn't till I looked at the trans out of the 98 that I realized there should not be any shaft showing. So I took the shaft and the planetary gear set out of the front of the 98 trans and put them in the other one and put everything back together and this is were I am at now.

If you messed up the trans pump you should have low pressure all the time.

You need to be looking at what is different between D and the 1 and 2 positions. The main difference between them is circuitry. Not electrical circuits, but hydraulic circuits.

When I say it works what I should really have said is it moves. It moves best in reverse and 2nd. In first it kind of lurches and vibrates really bad.

So I took the top trans coolant line loose from the radiator, so I could see the fluid flow. I then put the back end up on jack stands. Good flow in reverse, neutral, and 2nd. No fluid in 1st or D. However with the back tires up and no load on them the transmission turned and shifted. So now I am fairly sure its the trans pump. If I am wrong please let me know. I am dropping the trans again tomorrow and robing the pump of the other trans I have since as near as I can tell they are the same.

Realized I left something out as far as issues on this project.
As I stated before the Truck has been sitting for four years or so. Now when I put the old radiator on something interesting happened. Water went from the radiator into the trans. Now like me you are probably thinking that is impossible. See I flushed the radiator before install and then hooked up the hoses and before putting water in it the trans lines. So apparently there is a leak inside the radiator. Flushed the trans new fluid new filter, and new radiator hoses and everything. Now there is apparently sill water in the fluid so I am going to drain it again before I put the other trans pump on, and again new fluid and another new filter. Any other suggestions on a better way to flush the trans, or any info, suggestion would be welcome.
