My 05 Excursion windshield leaks slightly. The problem is intermittent. However according to Murphy's Law it is right in front of the driver. If it needs a reseal I may as well replace. I would like to install one with a darker tint across the top. To date I am having problems locating anything other than the stock tint. Has anyone heard of a darker tint?
Not aware of darker tint being available. If you tint yourself, check your state laws regarding the darkness and the size. In NC it can be no darker than 35% and can be no lower than 5" below top of windshield or no lower than the AS1 line on the glass.
why do Ford SD and EX have SO MANY problems with the windshields? In the SD section all you read about is how it leaks and fried the GEM control etc etc etc and now the EX are with the same issues....
Thanks to all for the response. Looks like I will have to seek an aftermarket custom windshield. I want as dark as I can get across the top 5". As long as the rest is clear I don't believe there should be any problems with law enforcement.
go to your windshield place and ask them to install a 2005+ F-250/350 windshield. It comes in 4 varieties. 1 says "Superduty" the other does not. Either one has a tint shield at the top 5"
I shudder to think what the cost of a custom windshield would run. I was priced out at $417 for a "Superduty" one wtih the tint
As others have said, look to get a Carlite windshield and have a tintshop put a strip across the top. I have a 35% 5" strip across the top of mine - would have preferred a gradient but I need to whatever I can to protect myself from the desert sun.
My entire windshield is covered with a 70% tint and then i have a 5% strip across the top. Very illegal but I love it. It kind of looks dark from the outside but they all do when all the windows are tinted already. My fronts are a 12% and then the backs are done in 5%. On the inside it has a little bit darker shade to it but it helps cut some glare down. Last year my triple 15s cracked the windshield all the way from pillar to pillar so now I'm going to have to get it redone. I think the tint is holding it together...lol I've priced windshields throughout the year and had pricing from $200 installed on up to the $450 range. Everyone says that the other uses lesser quality glass. Cut throat business with the glass companies.
The problem with all the leaks is the installers are lazy. Period
No reason for the to leak. I know this design is notorious and used more sealant when I replaced mine and have no issues with it.
All the different models will only come with the slight shade band and the easiest is to have the shop add the strip of tint before they install it. The moisture will not hurt, and in fact the sealant pulls out ambient air moisture to cure.
I replaced mine with the "SUPER DUTY" model from the pick up.
Rough cost is about $85 for the windshield, or less depending on buying power. Decent sealant is about $5 a tube and u need about 1 1/2 tubes +. Install time start to finish after vacuum and wipe down is 1 hr. Some guys will cut corners and be less time. The rest is gravy after that.
