Windshield Replacement and Calibration

So as with many of you I have a huge crack in my windshield that started as a stone chip. I am getting ready to schedule the replacement with Safelite and they are suggesting that I have the Advanced Driver Assistance System recalibrated. Anyone know if this is necessary? It's a 2018 F350 Lariat with the lane keep assist and all that jazz. Safelite wants $300 to do the recalibration, is this required or a scam?

Total scam. I have had to replace one windshield already and need a third one but I'm holding off until the damage gets in my line of sight.
$250 for a new windshield. $400 if you want the ford logo stamped on same windshield.
The windshield sits in front of the camera/sensors so there is no recalibration required provided they use the correct windshield of which there are only 2 and both made by same company.
It is literally as simple as removing the old windshield and laying the new one in its place. 30 minute job and I helped with mine since my buddy owns the local glass shop and I wanted to see it done.

After deciding against the camera calibration I called Safelite to schedule the replacement. They quoted $379 for the Safelite brand windshield and $729 for the genuine Ford OEM windshield! Seems crazy that there is such a crazy price difference. Any benefit to getting the Ford part?

I have no experience with Ford but on German cars, the glass quality affects the cameras vision and I have come across many vehicles with aftermarket glass and camera calibration faults only to require factory glass.

I had a small chip less than 3/8" in size and Safelite tried to patch it and couldn't. I'd be skeptical about a full on windshield replacement.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but did you even read my comment before asking this question? 🤷🏼*♂️
There is one windshield for these trucks. Some have a ford oem logo stamped on them. Some don’t.
Your money to spend as you wish.

Believe it or not, some people have had different experiences and opinions than you. I did read your comment however as you've seen with many other threads on this and every other forum in the world as well as most situation in life in general its typically best to do thorough research and not always put your eggs in one basket.

When I had mine replaced the forum was saying there was a sound deadening glass that is prone to break and the normal glass that will be much more break resistant. I did not get an offer of which I wanted and don't know if the statement was true. I was at an RV park when a retired insurance agent walked over and said to be sure and get OEM glass because some of the aftermarket glass has waves i it. I asked for OEM glass and it was replaced. I also saw the warning to take it back to the dealer for calibration. When I asked my dealer they didn't know what I was asking about. Only thing I needed to do was remount my dashcam. All has been well with my new glass. Almost ready for more trips this year. Good luck!

Best to get OEM - insurance installed non oem winshield in our RAM - auto lights and wipers never worked right till we got the Mopar windshield and a calibration done. Had an incorrect windshield installed in our 2015 Grand Cherokee - the auto stop went crazy - Jeep slammed on the brakes for no reason - From my experience you want the OEM glass or you may have issues. And yes the non OEM was calibrated and it still had issues. No biggie for me CSAA covered it.

Last comment on this topic I promise. In case it wasn't clearly stated above I have actual replacement experience and info from the glass industry. I DID NOT use the Ford logo stamped glass also referred to as OEM. ZERO issues. Both local Ford dealerships had zero interest in replacing it and referred me back to the same glass shop. I even went so far as to ask them about any potential issues with replacing the glass since at that time the truck only had 1800 miles on it and was still new to me and I was new to Ford. Both dealerships just laughed and said they had never heard of any recalibration.
There is 1 glass for our trucks. Of that 1 glass some have the Ford logo stamped on them. Some don't. That is the only difference. Same company makes both. You can't get one without the sound deadening layer as they all have it.

I'm reminded of the old saying "A fool and his money are soon parted". Just trying to help you guys not waste money as this world is full of folks ready and willing to say and do anything to take it from you.

Just FYI ............. I just priced mine online with Safelite with the "Ford" logo included = $549

I went back and re-entered to cover with insurance .......... so I'm not sure what my cost will be. According to FAQ on USAA web site....... the deductible is waved for windshield replacement.

I have not made a claim directly with USAA .......... I am letting Safelite handle. We'll see.

There’s a reason the replacement glass from Safelite, which I’m sure is DOT approved is cheaper than the OEM glass and it’s more than just a Ford logo.

Do it right, do it once.

Go with the OEM glass and have the calibration done at your dealer.

Question for you, does your automobile insurance cover windshield replacement for free?
If so, have the OEM windshield installed for free and just pay for the calibration at your Ford dealer which is a savings or perhaps your insurance will cover that as well without having to get into your deductible.

Gabar, I’ll bite. How do you know it’s more than just a logo? Please share your dot experience of dot approved products?
Pretty bold statement that lacks any kind of reference for credibility.
To answer your question you are exactly right. The cost difference is called branding.
Enlighten me on what you know differently. My info came from the manufacturer and a dot approved glass shop. What about yours?

Im having mine replaced by safelite on monday. Have gotten 2 calls, 3 emails, and a text. All stating the truck will have to be recalibrated after windshield replacement. And they want a whooping $300 to do it. Dealership says they never heard of it and have replaced a many of f150 thru f550 windshields. Which are all the same btw. Since they all share the same cab. Maybe a huge liability that safelite see's in the future. Wish someone would clarify from ford. I agree only one manufacture of these windshields. The scare tactic of all the notices and such could scare anyone into coughing up the extra dough. I have a commercial policy on my f450 and with geico commercial a $1000 deductible. So $424 is out of my pocket. This is without the recalibration. Hope all goes well with it.
