Has anybody come up with a resolution for that growling noise on start up on 5.4 engines ?
This is that horrible noise , like the fan clutch is engaged noise on start up when the truck sits for a day or so. I have done much research here, I did read older posts, Ford has said it is normal, some folks say it could be the a/c compressor, I kept thinking it could be the power steering pump. I recently replaced my radiator fan clutch. Still sound persists. Any input on this issue ?
UHUMMMM.... I guess nobody came up with a solution for the start up noise, well this noise is kind of embarrassing when cranking the truck in front of other people.
It only happens when the truck is sitting for few hours.
Funny thing it never happens in the morning....
Get a mechanics stehescope or a piece of long hose. Have someone start the car up and go listening! Be careful of the fan blade and belt whizzing by. Mine started a noise and it was the pulley above the tensioner pulley. good luck.
Woohoo.... I have found the cause of the growling noise on start up when the truck is sitting for more than 8 hours.
I had a suspition as well as someone mentioned in other posts it was the A/C compressor.
Last month my A/C broke down, all the freon leaked out. Suddenly I no longer have A/C , as well as the growling noise is gone on start up.
Further research just confirmed my suspitions IT IS INDEED THE A/C system.
Below is a copy of a page from the repair manual. I am about to repair my A/C system, upon reading the manual this came up :
Thanks for the update. I found this very interesting and informative. I always make sure to shut my air conditioning off when its no longer needed after long drive or when its been used for an extensive amount of time. Guess that doesn't matter when its been handled by PCM.

Most people that have the electronic climate control system don't realize that as long as it is set to 'automatic' that the compressor runs continuously.
