Engine refinement

I have an 03 Navigator and when I accelerate there are two types of noise that don't seem right and make the truck less refined than I think it should be.

1. There is a sort of rattling noise deep within the engine "sounds like a bag of nails" thought it might be a bearing issue but at 30,000 miles seems unlikely

2. The other noise I think may have been designed in which is a sort of intake roar when accelerating. Sounds overly loud as if engine is working much harder than the speedometer is indicating. I think it is to give an impression of power but I find it a pain compared to other luxury trucks I have tested

Any thoughts on these two items and has anyone driven an 05 model and if so how does it compare?

1. Are you running premium fuel?

2. May be related to #1 ... try some High-Test and see.

The roar is due to the fan being engaged. When the fan is disengaged, or if you swap over to an electric fan, the noise will go away, at least thats the noise that I hear.

As for the intake noise I know what you mean.
