i started my truck this morning and it started making metal-like-grinding noise. it almost sounds like a belt squealing but had a more metal-like-grinding sound to it. its a continuous noise. very loud. looking at the engine i can’t really tell were its coming from, but then again im not a mechanic so I’m not really sure what to look for. the sound is loud and hard to pin point. any idea? i was hopeing to fix it myself and advoid taking it to a shop.
no noise when it shuts down. i'm the only one that drives it. the day before it drove fine and no noise. then first thing the next morning it started making that noise. there is always a little oil onder the truck but no more then normal. i checked the oil and coolant and they are full. i moved the fan and it does move slightly but when i tried to tighten the bolts they were already as tight as they would go. i will have to check the other stuff when i get home.
Get a piece of wood, like a 3' broomstick, start the truck and hold it close to or on the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, etc and see where the noise is coming from. Be very careful near the fan. You can usually pinpoint it.
Sounds like a starter Bendix drive return spring bad. I had mind hang up and wouldn't retract. Sure make the damn-est noise while engaged into the flywheel while engine was running..
Also do like o/p say to check. Plus any up & down movemnt in the water pump shaft is any other place to check..
