HOWTO - 3G Alternator Installation

Multiple sources (some off-site) concerning 3G alternator installations:

I searched the internet and found plenty of 3G alternator upgrades documented, but I was confused, especially with the wiring (even though it is simple) and did not find one for our trucks.

A couple of people were interested in a write up, so here goes!

There are countless reasons to upgrade, and I am not here to sell you on them. If you are considering this upgrade, then you most likely have already researched the 3G alternator and where they come from. I got mine out of a Taurus (hint if you do not know where they come from).

If you want to do the upgrade, you will need beside the tools:

3G alternator
Mega Amp fuse
As long of a length of the alternator harness and battery wire from the back of the alternator out of the donor car you got the alternator from (it never hurts to have more and have to cut it, than not enough).

I completed this for about $30 in parts including the alternator.

There are a few different ways to go about the upgrade, and I do not know if mine is best, but it is simple and straight forward.

So lets start. *****DISCONNECT THE BATTERY***** The first and hardest part of this was getting out the old alternator. You can see why:

Is it me or can everyone only see the first step to the 3G swap? This pic is my wiring before swap. Any help on wiring would be greatly appreciated. (Later in the day) I found the link

The intention is that the user will click on the link at the top of each snippet, that will take them to the full thread. Only short snippets are shown here.

I am thinking my next project on the truck is a 3G alternator conversion. I keep forgetting what model to look for that will be a straight drop bolt in for a 1G alternator on my truck but I can find that out.

The only thing that is stumping me is I keep seeing people stating they are having problems with hooking up their chokes. I wanted to ask, this alternator has a stator wire, couldn't you just splice into this wire and run it to the ford choke? Stator only puts out 6 volt or so reguardless right? Atleast that's what I have always though. Want to find out on this cause no one really talks about splicing into the stator wire to maintain function of their factory choke.

If it helps, I found this today, from an old thread on here. Karl, if this is not a good addition, let know, I'll delete it.
