differential leak

I had a problem pop up with my truck before i deployed. its a 1995 xl single cab 300 5-speed, 2wd. about a week before i left for iraq, the rear differential started leaking where the drive shaft goes in. its not a fast leak, but my truck will not pass inspection in germany if i dont get it fixed. anybody know what i need to fix it? how hard it will be to fix?

i would like to have this figured out before i get back so i can order the parts and have them waiting.

any help is greatly appreciated,
kevin

you need a pinion seal. i did the same thing with mine and decided to just rebuild the whole rear. theyre really easy to do. or just clean it up really good before you take it in.

it depends, are you looking to just patch it to pass the inspection or fix it right?

just drop the drive shaft, pull the flange, you will need a 4" gear puller to do this, take a smaller flat screwdriver and pry the old seal out.....tap the new seal into place, replace the flange, reinstall drive shaft, and your done.....

mark the drive shaft in relation to the flange so you put it back on in the same relation to the flange

EDIT: on a side note, what are f150's going for in Germany these days ?

Not quite that easy. You have to get the pinion preload right or you risk damaging the gear set

i dont remember what the spec was but it took both my dad and i to get it torqued. the wrench didnt have the greatest amount of leverage but it got done. we just installed new bearings and seals, torqued everything and we never had any problems. i used to pull a 16ft flatbed and go off-road on the weekends. no problems at all. id give it a 5. it wasnt too bad.
