My differential leaks... :(

I was mowing the lawn and discovered a small puddle under my rear differential. I believe its a 9'' Ford rear. Its definently differential fluid, it looks like its all over the U joint as well.

I looked in my shop maual and it looks like there is an oil seal in there and my guess is thats whats busted. Does anyone know where i can get one or know what else may need to be replaced? How difficult is it to fix?

The truck is a 1963 f100 4x4 with a 292 in it.

I would be suprized if it has a 9 inch in a 4x4.

unless you know how to re-set the preload and backlash on the pinion i would pay the money and have a dif shop change it for you...

just my 2 cents.

Well what kind of differential do you think it has? I've never taken one apart, but it obviously needs to be fixed. Is it something that is easy to screw up?

I would think it is a Dana rear end, Does it have a back cover that unbolts from the rear end?

I would think yes.... you want the pinion to run in the center of the ring gear, it takes someone who knows how to set one up to get it right. we are talking about 2 thousands of an inch play between them, it takes speical tools to do that kind of work

Well i have a feeler gauge... just kidding...

Well about what do you think a repair like that will set me back? I dont even know how bad the leak is, I may just try to keep it filled up, but due to its location thats a little inconvenient.

I would take a few minutes to check out why it may be leaking. If it is caused by a wobbly pinion, then you need to take more drastic action than if the seal was leaking because it is merely old.
Chock the truck, put it in neutral with the parking brake off.
Get under the truck and attempt to wiggle the pinion. Push up and down and sideways on the yoke.
You may discover that the driveshaft also has play within the yoke, which may make it difficult to assess the actual amount of pinion play. Fix that first (with new U-joints) and try again.
It is pretty hard to determine how much play is bad - or not bad - in this venue, but you can probably tell right away if it is really bad, since there shouldn't be any play at all, either in the U-joints or the pinion yoke.

Most leaks are caused by a blocked breather. Clean it. Front seal is a simple job Remove the drive shaft. remove the pinion nut. Remove the yolk, Remove the seal and replace. Check the yolk for a groove if none is present reverse Order Torque the pinion nut to 150 foot pounds.

And why would a 61 to 66 F100 four wheel drive not have a 9"? Most were not ordered without a limited slip.

1961/67 F100 2WD/4WD; some 1968 F100 2WD/4WD:

IF Limited Slip was ordered, the truck will (usually) have a Dana 44. The 5 lug 5.50" bolt circle Dana 60.2 w/Limited Slip was an additional option over the Dana 44.

Without Limited Slip, the rear axle is a Ford 9 inch

Ford did not offer a 9" with Limited Slip in F100's until midyear 1968.

Ok so let me get this all straitened out here... I pretty much know for a fact that i have a ford 9'' rear, its not limited slip. I need a new oil seal. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and would feel comfortable taking it apart, especially since i have a fairly detailed shop manual for it. Do i need any special tools for this? anything expencive? i have a good set of wrenches as well as other various hand tools, but nothing specialized other than tools for woking on brakes.

Where do i get an oil seal? NAPA?

Also, what if it is just a breather? where is it and how do i check/fix it?

It will take a lot of oomph to remove the pinion nut, unless it is loose; the nut is pretty large too, a 1 and 1/8th if I remember correctly. (Check it first, I may not have that precisely correct.)
The vent is actually a hollow stud that holds the rear flexible brake line to the rear axle. It goes through the metal "Y" part, but does not open up the brake system. You can remove the vent-stud without having to do anything related to the brakes.
When new, a rubber line was on the vent, to keep road dirt and water from getting in, but it probably has rotted away.
Remove the stud, clean it out, reinstall it and then replace the rubber line, Tuck the rubber line somewhere up inside the frame; the original little spring clip might even be there to hold it in place.
