Do you have play in the linkage. A bit of room for the spring to pull the throughout bearing off the fingers. Sounds like the beearing is running all the time causing it to let out the smoke it has in it.

no play in anything but my free travel is right and the clutch grabs where it's supposed to. My entire pedal linkage was replaced a couple years ago and it still looks perfect. The Ford dealer did that right before I got it.
I just got it done and running. Sure feels nice. I guess that pilot was out for a while. No more grabby crap now when I let the pedal out. It's been doing that for a while and I was kinda thinking it was normal. I haven't been on the road with it yet. I filled the trans back up with 4 quarts of royal purple atf too so we'll see how much nicer it shifts like that. I had the right amount of mobil 1 in it before.
it's like a brand new truck now. I fixed all those wasted synchros too while I was at it. I can actually downshift without the gas pedal now!!! never done that before.
