Starter upgrade clarification please

I have... 97 F-Superduty 7.3L that needs a starter....
Starter I pulled is... no cone, 12 teeth, inline motor.
I hear about using the SuperDuty starter which is a gear reduction setup which I want but..... exactly what vehicle would you specify when you talk to a parts counter person to get that?

I pulled a 91 7.3L starter which is a cone, 13 tooth, offset motor reduction starter.... I'm assuming it doesn't fit.... which is too bad cause it's brand new and free.

Am i right in assuming you have to go to the 6.0L to get the proper "upgrade" for my application? It's a no cone, 12 tooth reduction setup that looks like it just bolts in.

OR

Is there a later model 7.3L starter I'm looking for like in the 99-03 era? I didn't look at this one yet so that's why I'm asking.

I do not want to order something online (at this time), don't have the time or patience right now, just looking at going to parts store and paying way too much to get it running again. SO.... if I walked in tomorrow, what vehicle would I ask for to get the gear reduction upgrade for my 97 7.3L

I looked at a ford parts site that listed "starter motor" for the 91, 97, 04 diesels and it listed the same part for all of them, which has added to my confusion.

Not sure that the 6.0 will fit. I know for a fact the 99-03 7.3L will fit.

I'm not sure. I dont think its like a high torque gear reduction like a db electrical. But i think it is an upgrade to ours.

lol... you States guys have a lot of good deals.... I'm looking at like 3hundy here. (Also don't want a starter getting tossed and dropped on it's way here at which point warranty might be a pain for me).

Unless anyone states otherwise, I'm going to go get one tomorrow... 115 cranking rpm isn't working anymore.

So.. a stock starter for a 02 F 250SD should be the gear reduction type and should be what I ask for right?

UPDATE..... so, after a lot of money, I purchased a starter for a 02 F250 with a 7.3L. It was indeed an offset gear reduction setup. It had only 2 bolts, top and bottom, and the trigger wire terminal needed to be modified/replaced to fit the bigger stud. I wouldn't say it tried to rip the motor out of the engine bay, but it indeed spun the motor at roughly 250rpm. I have a 5yr warranty (no questions asked), so if this one isn't quite up to snuff, I'll keep swapping them out until I find a good one.

On the bad side, after doing this, I noticed a fuel leak around the filter bowl area... unsure of what's leaking so... the money pit strikes again.
