In the 1960's, did Ford, Lincoln, and/or Mercury engines ever come from the factory painted red? I know that the Ford Y-blocks during the mid-1950's were painted red, but anything red during the 1960's? I'm looking at buying a Mercury engine that is red and the owner claims that the red color is factory original.
Dan,
If I recall correctly, the engines that came in the '61-'65 F100 & larger trucks were painted black except their rocker arm covers. The rocker arm covers were painted different colors depending on the engine size. Then in '66, all the truck engines were painted all dark blue, including the rocker arm covers. So no red engines here......
I don't know about car engine colors or if any Mercury truck (M100/M250) engines were ever painted red at the factory.
So what year Mercury engine are you looking at?
What is the engine displacement size?
Does anyone have a Ford-issued rocker arm cover color chart that would identify the displacement size of the '61-'65 Ford truck engine types? If so, please share it!
Is one that popped up. I am looking in the truck catalogs now to see if they are correct or if the canadian trucks have something listed under the paint section.
I do believe that everything was painted black until 66 or 67. But it doesn't matter, it's your engine so paint her up lol, at least black hides the oil leaks.
Thanks guys. The engine I'm looking at is supposedly a 410 Mercury engine that came out of a '65-'66 Mercury. The owner says that the Mercury 410 was painted red from the factory, but every photo I've seen so far shows blue. Also, I understand that the 410 FE was only available in 1966-67 Mercurys.

Dan M.
Since the 410 was only used in 1966/67 Mercury Parklanes, the engine would be painted the same as all 1966 thru the late 1980's Ford engines.
Thanks Bill. After surfing the internet on '66-'67 Mercurys, every 410 engine that I saw was painted Ford blue. It looks like 1965 Mercury engines were painted black with red valve covers, but then if it was a 1965, it would be a 390 and not a 410.
By the way, thanks for your expert advise on the Ford forum. The accurate information that you have posted over the years has been a big help in my project.
