Yesterday, I was out in my truck setting at a stop light and decided to "nail" the throttle when the light turned green. I felt something "not right". The tranny either slipped and then caught or it was the converter. When I got home, I unloaded some things out of the truck, and fired the truck back up and put it in reverse, there was a "squeal" sound for just a second. I checked the fluid and it was dark.
My question is...
I am thinking of changing the tranny filter myself, and trying to flush the fluid myself instead of taking it to the shop. I checked the owners manual and it holds 17.7 quarts of fluid. Any one ever done this their self...
Do I have more problems than just needing to flush the tranny and changing the filter?
Time to do a fluid and filter change. It holds 19qts.
There is a step by step guide on how to do it around here somewhere.
It is very easy to do as you have a drain plug on the bottom of the pan. To change the filter, the pan needs to come off and also know that the gasket on the pan is reuseable.
ATF about $4.50-$5.00 qt= almost $100
Couple hours time???
Mess in driveway
disposal of 20 qts ATF
Don't get me wrong, I do almost every maintenance item myself, but why kill yourself when you can go to a quick oil change and have them hook up the flush machine for $129.00. The machine works just like you would flush and fill yourself, it drains and fills several times through the process with the engine started and running through the gears in order to completely flush the TC and Valve body. Then if you want to take it home and change the filter just make sure your pan and container are clean so you can reuse what you drain. Just my .02.
If your truck was built between 7/2000 and 3/2001 don't be surprised if the mechanical diode went bad in your trans.. There was a problem then... See the following thread for more info: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...s-problem.html

Sig line says 2002. The diode should not come into play.
Hard to read the build date on the sticker on drivers side door, but best I can see, it was built on 01/02...So, then mechanical diode shouldn't be a problem...I'm gonna call the local shop and get a price for a flush job and filter change...Thanks for the info...I;ll keep you guys posted...

The 'build date' for the transmission is on the transmission itself.
I'll check the tag out on the tranny and look for a build date...Stopped by the shop and got an estimate for a flush job...They said $195.00 without a filter change...I think I'll have to pass...
Do it yourself and do it right. With FTE helping. Have someone else do it and they will screw it up. Might get it back and there will be a mystery grind in the rear diff or the windshield wiper motor won't work.. Who knows.
