Pulled the 5th wheel for 240 miles today and the truck ran great, first long trip with my dp tuner. Coming into town I slowed down to make a turn and started to accelerate and the truck didn't want to come out of 2nd gear and it had a metalic clanking. It did this two more time getting through town. When I got to the house I unhooked the trailer and drove the truck and it did it again.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, am I looking at a simple fix or a new trannny.
I don't know the symptoms that occur in transmissions with the mechanical diode problem, but since yours is an '01, that's the first thing that comes to mind.
I had the same exact issue with my 01 and yes the mech diode usually is the problem. While your in there I would recommend changing the torque converter and maybe possibly doing a "tugger kit" as some call it. My trans was done for 1500.00 with all needed parts plus the converter and tugger kit. Its so smooth now I cant believe I never did it sooner for the heck of it. once done CORRECTLY you shouldnt have any more problems for years to come.
I drove the truck again and it only does this in 2nd gear. 1st, 3rd and 4th seem to be working fine. How difficult is it to replace the mechanical diode?
You'll be far enough into the trans that a full rebuild will be in order. Not just the mech diode will need replacing, but the direct drum as well to upgrade this part. The hard parts add about another couple hundred bucks to the cost of rebuilding.
kiss it GOODBYE that is exactly what happen to my old man (o its just a sensor)
that peace of metal costed a extra $200. luckly for him it did not eat up anything more
Well, the trans is toast. After talking to 5 tranny shops to include John Wood I decided to have a local shop take care of it. Should find out no later than wednesday how it is.
