Question Chip W/No Gauges?

Hey everyone.

I wanted to run something past everyone. It is getting closer and closer to the time of year where I will not be working. I was planning on getting gauges and a tuner beforehand but I have come to find out that I cannot afford to drop another $1000 into my truck for now. I know that it is not good to run chips/tuners without having a way to gauge what is going on but I do not want to be running stock tune from now until I can afford to go big. I know that off the shelf chips are not as good as tuners and may be harder on your truck as well. Basically I want to get a single tune chip/tuner that isn't too much to run without gauges but is still an upgrade from stock tune. What do you think? Something like 60-65hp and 12-150 ft-lb is what I am thinking. I am searching for something of the sort as we speak.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Now you know who were going to turn you on too now, don't yaa!! You got some good ones here and abroad, DP, PHP, Tony Wildman. Heard guys praising the Beans and Swamps tunes too when they were here. Nation people gots their toys too over there. You know you can pick up a full 3 pillar set of gauges over at Powerstroke Nation. I was lurking around and seen them in the electronics section. The fella had them on his truck for some time and no problems and he has the probes and all hardware to connect, check it out. 250.00 for these http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/...ad.php?t=73991

Did you post a pic. I cant see it. Can you put it in your gallery and copy paste the code? And yes. I know that I want a DP or PHP tuner + gauges but I cant afford that for now. I just want a single tune chip that will supply more HP nd TQ but not too much to where I need gauges. So are you sayin that I should get a DP or PHP or some kind of tuner with just a single tune? A tune that wont be too much without gauges?

Bryce, you could send your PCM to Jody @ DP-TUNER and for under 100 he can flash the PCM with a tune like the 60 or 80 econo.

Bryce, I tried a superchips tuner that my boss has in our shop truck while my DP was out for a reflash. Its wasn't all that bad. See if you can score a used one for a good price, just make sure the truck it came from has the stock tune reinstalled, or it wont work.

My boss ran the SC in his 01 F350 for years before I talked him into a DP, he was absolutly amazed in the difference. Compared to my DP, there is no off the shelf tuner that would come close to Jodys tunes, But The SC is much better than stock in my opinion.

Ya. I have thought about that but I have heard mixed things about getting hard flashes like that. I may want to keep the PCM stock and just add actual hardware instead of flashing it. I hear that it is better to do it this way because otherwise you are stuck with that flash whether you want it or not. Do you suggest getting a single tune chip or tuner without having gauges? as long as It doesn't push the truck too hard?

This. ^ ^ ^ Give Jody a call. The 80E is the route I'm heading as well. The Boss(Mrs. Jardo) isn't ready for me to spend the money for the tuner and gauges either...I'm going to prove to her that the tuner will be worth it for fuel economy alone....or die trying.

EDIT: I know for a fact that HKusp(Jason) runs the 80E 99% of the time on his truck....

You could do a chip with 2 tunes for $300, maybe something like 80dd & 100perf or 120. You would still have the stock so 3 spots would be used then add to it later. Just thinking, seems like pretty good deal in post # 2

If you change your mind about Ricks idea, I have a spare e99 PCM that I can send to Jody for you, and he could send it to you with a flash so your truck isn't down at all. You could just send me your stock one to replace my spare.
Just throwing that out there. If you dont like it, we could just swap back.

Thanks for the Link! I called the guy. He says that they are autometer z-series (Black background, White numbers, Red pointer). He said that the boost gauge doesn't work well. He said that it is reading 14psi after he put on new up pipes and there is not a leak anywhere to be found. Kind of curious if it is actually the gauge that is messed up. Autometers shouldnt go bad like that. I am first in line for them. I am sending him my email and he will be sending me pictures. He thought about throwing his buddies boost gauge into his truck to see if it is the gauge or if there is actually a leak somewhere. He said $200 + shipping for the pod, pyro, and trans gauges. He also said that he could order up the boost gauge for me and then charge me 250 + shipping for the whole thing but I can order it up. What do you guys think?!

Dang Frank. Where were you a week ago?! ha. I needed that E99 pcm when I fried mine. But I ended up buying the NVK4 (year 2000) PCM. Thanks for the offer and I will keep that in mind but if I do want to get it flashed I would want to flash my NVK4 instead of your E99. So if I do decide to get it flashed instead of getting a chip/tuner for now, could I borrow your E99 PCM while mine is going to Jody and back so that I can get to work? I could come up with some kind of collateral.

Can everybody keep an eye out for me for a decently priced used or new chip that I can run until I get custom tunes ?
