The weight bias of these trucks (roughly 65/35) makes getting them to handle tricky. A short bed like you want to use will be better because the weight bias is more favorable.
You'll need to actually ADD weight (to the rear) to make them handle better.
Consider adding independent rear suspension from a late model Ford. This will add some weight where you need it and will make handling better.
For the rear suspension, I'd consider a triangulated 4-link or 4-link with a panhard bar, both systems with coil over shocks. Another way to go is with truck arms (ala 67-72 Chebbie) and a panhard bar.
In terms of weight bias, an alternative is to move the engine back a few inches.
Say, what engine? A big block introduce unneeded weight so let's go with a 351W or a 351W stroked to 392 or 427 backed by a T-5. If you don't need or want overdrive then a Toploader would do OK.
The majority of the front and some of the rear are parts I ordered from Fatman Fab. I am still sorting out alot of details, but I am pretty happy with the ride height. When I put the 460 in I am going to get it as far back as I possibly can to help with weight transfer. It should hook up pretty good with the 4 bar in the back as there should be literally no axle wrap.
