400 harmonic balancer

I have a 400 out of an 80 F250 that i just built up from a 351M. I was wondering, does the 351 harmonic balancer work for the 400 or are they different?

Yes it will work, they both share the same 28oz imbalance. A 351C balancer will work as well.

I was thinking for years that they were different because mine for my 351M and my 400 are different, but the differences were in the weigt of the ring as a whole, they do have the same size counterweight in the same spot. I found this place that rebuilds them and has good pics of the various ones. i guess the outer rings are heavier maybe because of AC, or maybe because the 351M one is original for an auto truck, the heavier one off the 400 was in a manual F-350? Timing marks are in same position relative to the key way as well, as they should be.

At the link you can check yours out as well. Mine are different, but according to the link, each will work on either motor OK.

D5AE-BA (FOR3023A) on my '77 351M came on my '77 F-150 with auto and no AC originally as I added AC in '87.

D1AE-AA (FOR3513) on my '79 400 frrom a '79 F350 wrecker w 4 spd, non-AC.

I've been switching them around for 30 years and never had a problem. If the rubber looks good and there isn't a seal track worn into it use it. There were sure more than a few different looking ones through the years but anyone will work on any 335 series engine.
