Cold air intakes??

I know i'll get some static over this,, and many of you have said that the stock air filter is the best for the 6.0. I"m certainly not arguing that, since yall know way more than I do about these trucks. But you can pick up any "diesel" magazine and every other page is about a performance cold air intake, or something of that type. These companies, most are reputable performance people,,,how can all of them be wrong?? I guess what i'm asking is what does happen with a nice high performance cold air intake, does it do the turbo harm?? It seems to me that almost any high performance part does some type of harm. After all,, most will recommend a tuner, and up comes the heads. If there is any intake yall could possibly live with,, what would be a good brand to get,, thanks....

aFe PG 7. Unless you're really bangin the slugs, you won't see/feel any performance benefit.

Intake companies advertise horsepower gains which can be accomplished under ideal circumstances. Your results may vary.

I need to start a business that markets a vacuum attached to the exhaust driven by a 300hp auxiliary motor that will greatly increase horsepower.

The common trade off for better flow is reduced filtration. Very fine dust, over time, will wear on your cylinder walls, and lower your compression (which is the ignition source for your fuel). Most of us call it "dusting the engine".

Aftermarket intakes are the last place to look for power unless you're on a big single or compounds.

filtering isnt quite as good, but as long as your not in the middle of the sahara desert in a sand storm, it probably wouldnt hurt

Choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. If you are bound and determine about spending money, send some my way. I need it for my startup.

Do not seek the treasure!

Magazines are all about ads and bs mainly. Save your money unless your going big on hp. If making big hp gains was that cheap we'd all have one.

If I could get away with it I thought about running an ad that's promotes higher FP and send out a couple of BB's for $100. It would be a two stage kit.

Spend your intake money on an SCT with custom tunes and ditch the SC's. Even with race files, a stock turbo'd, stock injectored truck doesn't need an aftermarket intake. Once you get used to that, get a nitrous system for <$1000 and have fun (still with your stock intake).

If you're dead set on an intake, I listed the best available earlier in this thread.

I'm sure no one really answered your question like you wanted....but its all true!!! I do have an AFE intake, but I don't see any gains besides maybe a higher pitched whistle and it looks cooler than the stocker. If you have an extra $400 to spend on an intake..look into SCT tuner and you'll be glad that you did. I promise.

K&N Cold Intake

I have had my K&N on for over 100,000 miles. I regulary clean it and have had no problems. I just did a egr and oil cooler replacement/update. While the turbo was out had the local CAT dealer inspect the turbo for wear. Was what they expected for engine with 150,000 miles. On the negative, I did not find it produced any more horsepower like was advertised. Also, if you don't keep the filter housing tight to intake pipe that runs to the turbo, it will "turbo fart" like crazy. The key as with anything is proper maintenance (oiled and clean).

That's because it won't. It won't because it doesn't flow more then the stock intake until you hit 3700 on the tach. Stock or just tuned 6.0s peak HP/TQ is at 3300 and 2000 respectively on the tach. You are well outside the usuable range by the time that K&N flows more.

That 3700 was actually looking at K&N's own graphs for a 6.0. It's harder then hell to find that graph now. They tend to just show the 7.3 graphs now(which it helps out a lot on the 7.3) as that helps what they are claiming.

Most people just stop at the point of it flowing more then stock. You need to look beyond that to where does it flow more then stock. It does flow more then stock, but it flows more too late. Unless you are going to raise the RPM range of a 6.0(which would take modified injectors and/or a/m turbo(s)), you need to work within the range of the 6.0.
