I have an '89 F-150, 300 I6, 2 wheel drive with the Mazda M5OD. I just put in a rebuild engine engine not a week ago and put about 50 miles on the new engine. The truck has about 154,000 miles on it. I went to drive the truck yesterday and the engine just stalled out if i tried to takeoff in any of the forward gears. If i put it in neutral and let up on the clutch, the truck goes in reverse. If i put it in reverse the truck goes in reverse. I took the shift bar housing off the top of the tranny and both shift forks are fine. Im tryin to figure out whats wrong and dont have much money to spend. Please help.
SOUNDS LIKE THE SHIFT FORK FOR REVERSE/OD WAS POSITIONED IN REVERSE WHEN YOU PUT THE COVER OVER THE TOP OF THE TRANNY. THE REASON FOR THE STALLING IN ANY FORWARD GEARS IS BECAUSE YOU GOT REVERSE ACTING AGAINST FORWARD FUNNY AS IT SEEMS IT DONT WORK... USE A SCREWDRIVER AND PRY THE REVERSE FORK POSITION BACK TO NEUTRAL POSITION, THEN PUT THE LITTLE NIPPLE THAT STIFTS THE GEARS IN THE CENTER OF THE TABS. SHOULD LOOK LIKE A RECTANGLE WHEN ALL GEARS ARE NEUTRAL, THIS IS A CRAPPY SKETCH BUT I HOPE IT WORKS. ALL SHOULD LOOK LIKE [ + ] ALL CENTER, WHERE THE PLUS SIGN SHOULD BE THE LITTLE TABBY

THIS IS THE ONE
YOU WANT... TRY IT AGAIN
AND LET ME KNOW. MAKE SURE YOU GOT GOOD OIL IN IT TOO.
After spending a total of $30 and about 8 hours, i finally found the problem. The lever thats attatched to the lower portion of the tranny case. The bold that stops it from slidin was missin so i replaced that and put it back together and that solved the problem. Thank god for the internet and guys that know stuff about these trannies.
