C4 not engaging wothout reving engine

Please help as I am completely in the dark where AT's are concerned. I just aquired a 71 Ranchero with 351C and C4. It will not engage in gear untill you rap the accelerator and then it lurches off. Fluid looks OK. Do I need a rebuild or is there some repair for this problem. Ignorance is certainly not bliss!

try adding some fluid "TYPE F"

Is it not in gear or just not moving?

It sounds like the previous owner may have put in a high stall torque converter.

What RPM does it hook up at?

Stall converters will not lurch. They have a very gradual slippage all the way up to their stall point. You are either low on fluid or you have a more serious mechanical problem that will need looked at by a pro.

Thanks for the help! The fluid is OK and I am almost certain based on the cars history that a high stall converter was not added. I will be seeking proffesional guidance!
