Hello i have a 1999 ford explorer 4.0 Vin x with the 5R55E. For the last 3 to 4 months it has fluttered alittle when put into reverse for the first trip of the day. If you put into drive first then into reverse it goes right into reverse right away. This morning I went out to goto work started backing out of the driveway and reverse just let go. It still drags the motor down alittle when you put into reverse but doesn't go anywere. It shifts through all the forward gears like normal, just no reverse. Any ideas, Is it mechanical or could it be electrical???
could be either. if it was slipping i would say mechanical. if the motor pulls down, but truck dont move, it might be stuck in forward and reverse gears together. this has an electroical sonenoid pack in the transmission pan. would need to remove pan, remove solenoids, clean, test, etc. again, could be either.
It could be an electrical problem, but mechanical is more likely. What have you continued to drive this way? The more you use a trans that has a problem, the more expensive it becomes to get it fixed.
I'm leaning towards a mecanical issue. It didn't slip once in reverse. It felt like it popped out of gear, there was a clunk sound and then no reverse. It goes forward like nothing is wrong and when you put it in reverse it kinda sound like the reverse band isn't engaging all the way and makes a constant "shhhhhh" sound while in reverse the sound isn't very loud. Yes we have no choice but to drive it. I'm having the trans swapped out on wednesday. $300. for trans and $250. for labor. Unless there is a very common reason that this is happening.
