Hello- I have a 1990 F-350 460 4x4 Crew Cab Lariat with 242,000 miles. The engine runs great but the trans has the typical E4OD problems. Rough shift into 2nd and hard shift into reverse. I soften the hard reverse shift by putting the shifter in and out of reverse 2 -3 times before keeping it in reverse. I have a rebuilt E4OD I want to put in. Does any body have any tips on doing this project? How long will it take? Should I get a new torque converter? I have the factory manuals for the truck which should help. Any opinions would be great. As a side note the Carlisle Truck Show was awesome!!
I've done swap-outs in half a day before, and that's without a lift. And not really being in a hurry.
My personal opinion (which will probably be echoed by others), is to always change the torque converter when changing or rebuilding a transmission. "Cheap insurance", so to speak, compared to possibly re-pulling it because of a "dirty" converter.
