I have been working on my 77 F100/C6 2wd Auto. I have had it for about a year but it has been sitting at my grandfathers house for the past 11months because they could not get anyone to finish work on it. I have been working on it for about a week now getting things back together. It has a 351w (i believe) in it that was put in before I had it shipped to me. It did not have a distributor and I got one out of a thunderbird that did have a 351w(Or so he said and it looked just like mine. I went to put it in and the distributor will not sit down in there. I know about the oil pump shaft and turned the crank little by little to see if it will seat but it will not sit down far enough for the gears to mesh. It will only get down as far as the bottom of the bobbin looking thing that has the o-ring attached. I can almost freely turn the rotor. It catches just enough to let you know something is actually down there. From what I understand the only thing that should be standing in my way is the oil pump drive shaft or possibly the cam gear on the distributor. I'm at a loss for the moment. Maybe the distributor is a really tight fit and I need to "Perfectly" align the shaft and bobbin (Dont know that else to call it) please see the picture for a better explanation.
If it's the correct distributor, the oil pump drive shaft isn't letting the distributor drop in all the way. You may need to use a long straight blade screw driver to turn the oil pump shaft shaft until the distributor will drop in.
actually the screw driver won't work, it should be an 8MM hex head on it. so with great care, an 8MM socket on long extension. it's how I prime oil through my motors before initial start up. but, be careful, you drop the socket in, and you've gotta tear the pan out to get it back.
the oil pump shaft for a 351w is also bigger than a 302. Before we could give you a definate answer we need to determine if you have a 302 or 351w and what your distributor came out of. A 351w should be about 12 inches across the intake from valve cover vc. A 302 should be about 9 inches from vc to vc
Well, it measures 9in so I guess its a 302 . I was told it was a 351w by the goof I bought it from. But I guess I cant complain yet since I only paid $250 for it. As long as it runs as the seller promised. So I would assume that's my problem. Back to the junk yard.
