Under the hood?

I am very interested in how you worked out that out of chassis exhaust system. Were they pre-manufactured headers or were they custom? Does the exhaust exit between the frame rails under the bed or do they exit under the running boards? Muffler? Any other modifications required? Stock steering box possible?
I am very impressed with your set up. I have lots of questions and my headers on my 302 are almost touching my stock steering box in my 51 F1. Thanks for your help. Steve

Actually the difference in size between your 302 and my 390 is just enough to allow you to use Sanderson headers between the engine and frame and me not being able to use them. In the top picture below you can see how close even these are to the steering box and tube.
A few caviats: First Ihave a full front tilt so I have removed the inner fenders from my dog house.
The headers were custom made ($1700) as was the collector pipe. They dump into a set of 83" Partiot side pipes (with mufflers internally) that hang on the lower edge of the running board. The original kit also comes with a fakey header pipe that mounts to a standard exhaust manifold to look like headers - but I tossed those.
Here's a link with the pipes kit picture:

And some pics of the entire installation - sounds REAL NICE!

A couple more pics for you Steve. When the front tilt is down and resting on the top of the cowl, there is about 3/4 inch clearance between the bottom of the fender (which floats) and the collector pipe. The collector pipe is pretty tough to keep polished especially in the rain or mud (as you will note in the bottom photo after I pulled back on the dirt by my corrals!)
But you can see how "clean" the installation looks with the hood and fenders down.
One last thing. I opted to not put those horrible Corvette type heat sheild grated on the pipes - really ugly. You have to be careful not to touch them when you get out. I've only done it once by mistake. After that one time, you automatically stay away from them. After a week or so of setting my entry and exit habits, it's not an issue!

Julie, I was looking at the sanderson headers online and I was wondering if you knew which ones would work the best with a stock front end and steering. It looks like the block hugger designs would be the best. If the collector was more in the middle, then it would be ideal. The FF1 and FF5 looked to be the best. Would you recommend one of them or another model for the 302? Thanks, Steve

You have to open it up to full size then either copy the URL under properties or import it whil it's open (not just the menu view). If You have troubles, import them into your galleries and I'll post them for you.
Hey Steve, I'm not exactly sure which model, but the Sanderson block huggers are the ones everyone here has been talking about - and installing I think.
Best thing to do is start a new thread about it (eventhough we have talked about it before) and ask for inputs. that way folks looking at the thread list will know you need info rather than your questions bein gburried in a thread about a different subject.
